Attorney

We are currently seeking an associate attorney for a Richmond, Virginia law firm. The civil litigation attorney is responsible for representing clients in civil disputes through all phases of litigation, including case evaluation, discovery, motion practice, settlement negotiations, trial preparation, and trial. The attorney will provide strategic legal counsel, advocate for clients in court, and work closely with clients, opposing counsel, and court personnel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of civil litigation matters from inception through resolution.
• Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on complex legal issues.
• Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery requests, responses, and other legal documents.
• Take and defend depositions of parties, witnesses, and experts.
• Attend court hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and trials.
• Develop case strategies and evaluate legal risks and exposure.
• Negotiate settlements and resolve disputes efficiently and effectively.
• Communicate regularly with clients regarding case status, strategy, and expectations.
• Collaborate with attorneys, paralegals, and support staff to ensure effective case management.
• Maintain accurate billing records and meet billable hour requirements, if applicable.
• Stay current on developments in applicable laws and court procedures.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
• Active license and good standing with the applicable state bar.
• 3+ years of civil litigation experience preferred (can be adjusted based on level sought).
• Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
• Experience handling discovery, depositions, motion practice, and court appearances.
• Trial experience preferred but not required.
• Excellent negotiation and client relationship management skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
