Machine Operator
The Machine Operator safely operates and monitors large-scale plastics processing equipment, including granulators, shredders, color systems, wet sorter systems, and extruders, while handling materials and maintaining high product quality. This role involves reading and following production instructions, performing basic mechanical tasks, documenting production data, and supporting a clean, organized, and efficient manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Understand, follow, and apply information from the Run Instruction Sheet (RIS) to set up, run, shut down, troubleshoot, clean, and perform general maintenance on assigned machines.
- Operate equipment such as granulators, shredders, color systems, wet sorter systems, and extruders in a safe, efficient, and consistent manner.
- Take regular and accurate product samples, systematically probe boxes as directed by the RIS, and report any quality issues or inconsistencies to laboratory personnel and supervisors.
- Thoroughly clean boxes, lids, and skids before use, inspect packaging for defects, and remove or dispose of any substandard materials prior to reuse.
- Complete the Run Number Time Log at the end of each shift and ensure all production and quality data is accurately recorded and legible.
- Update the RIS as needed based on run conditions and promptly communicate changes or observations to supervisors.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area throughout the shift, following all housekeeping and safety guidelines.
- Maintain and accurately complete production logs and ledgers, including inbound, outbound, reject, and run records, as well as quality control documentation.
- Complete Work in Process (WIP) and Ready for Sale (RFS) tags accurately and ensure proper labeling of materials.
- Compute weights using correct gross, tare, and net figures, and record all weights for boxes and hoppers in the appropriate locations.
- Weigh materials in boxes and hoppers and document results to support production and quality requirements.
- Become certified to operate a forklift and aerial lift as needed and use this equipment safely and effectively.
- Load and unload materials and place them into proper inventory locations using a forklift or pallet jack.
- Assist with training new associates on machine operation, safety practices, documentation, and work procedures.
- Compute pounds per hour processed during runs and calculate percentages to document run conditions and productivity standards.
- Prepare boxes for material by placing labels in the correct locations and removing extra or incorrect labels.
- Participate in shift meetings and training sessions to stay informed about production requirements, safety updates, and process changes.
- Climb stairs or use an aerial lift to access upper parts of systems for troubleshooting, clearing jams, and performing basic maintenance.
- Follow all plant safety rules, including the use of personal protective equipment and restrictions on personal items in production areas.
Essential Skills
- Experience working in a manufacturing environment around machines is preferred, but not required.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical computations, including addition, subtraction, and calculating percentages.
- Strong handwriting and the ability to keep clear, legible paper records so that the next operator can easily read notes and logs.
- Experience troubleshooting in a manufacturing environment, with a focus on problem solving rather than mechanical or electrical repair.
- Sit-down forklift experience and the ability to operate a forklift safely.
- Ability to stand for the duration of the shift, except during scheduled breaks.
- Ability to lift up to 65 pounds, on an occasional but non-repetitive basis.
- Comfort working at heights and the ability to use an aerial lift up to approximately 25 feet while wearing a harness.
- Ownership of steel-toed or composite-toed shoes or boots suitable for a manufacturing environment.
- Willingness and ability to work mandated Saturdays on rare occasions when business needs require it.
- Mechanical aptitude and comfort operating and monitoring production machinery.
- Basic understanding of quality checks and production processes in a manufacturing setting.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in plastics manufacturing, including exposure to injection molding or extrusion processes.
- Experience in general production, general labor, or material handling roles.
- Familiarity with extrusion machines and related equipment.
- Experience performing quality checks and documenting production data in a manufacturing environment.
- Comfort working with large, complex systems and learning new machinery.
- Ability to collaborate with team members and support new associate training.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written instructions such as Run Instruction Sheets.
- Good communication skills to report issues and share information across shifts.
Why Work Here?
Employees join this facility to be part of a rapidly growing operation with clear opportunities for advancement and leadership. The organization offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, prescription drug coverage, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, life and AD&D insurance, disability coverage, an employee assistance program, and a range of voluntary benefits and valuable extras such as stock options and retirement savings plans. Team members benefit from stable shift schedules, structured training, and the chance to grow into higher-responsibility roles as the facility expands and additional shifts are added. The culture values safety, reliability, and continuous improvement, creating an environment where motivated individuals can build long-term careers.
Work Environment
This role is based in a traditional manufacturing plant focused on plastics processing and recycling. The facility operates multiple shifts: a first shift from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; a second shift from 3:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., Monday through Friday; and a third shift from 11:30 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., Sunday night through Thursday night. The systems and machines are large, some reaching up to two stories high, and perform tasks such as receiving, separating, and processing plastic materials. The environment includes some dust and noise, so hearing and eye protection are required at all times in the plant. Temperatures can be hot in the summer near certain machines and comfortable to cool in the winter. Employees may need to climb stairs or use aerial lifts to access upper levels of equipment for troubleshooting and clearing jams. Dock-related duties involve working along the outer wall of the facility to load and unload trucks. Personal protective equipment and dress guidelines include wearing steel or composite toe shoes or boots, avoiding baggy clothing and garments with dangling strings, and not wearing jewelry or items that can catch in machinery. Long hair must be secured, and hoodies or jackets with loose drawstrings are not permitted. Shorts are not allowed, and pants must fit properly at the waist. Good personal hygiene is expected. Cell phones and smart watches are not allowed on the production floor or on forklifts and must be stored in lockers or vehicles. Overall, the plant emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and adherence to strict operational and dress standards to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
