About The Position Join the Grants Pass Police Department. Officers serve our community with a team that values a culture of respect and excellence. A lateral officer must hold an active Oregon DPSST Police Officer certification or a current valid Police Officer certification from another state and have been employed as a certified Police Officer. Lateral Officers must meet the Oregon DPSST physical requirements and the department’s requirements. Lateral Officers will be provided with duty‑related equipment. Incentives In addition to base salary, incentives are available upon verification to Police Officers include: Associate Degree – 2.5% Bachelor Degree – 5% Second language – 1.25% DPSST Intermediate Certificate – 2.5% DPSST Advanced Certificate – 4.0% Associate and Bachelor Degree incentives are not cumulative. Lateral Officer Incentives Signing Bonus upon meeting eligibility requirements: $1,000 at the time of hire for a Lateral Officer who has qualified years of experience as a sworn, full‑time officer. Step at hire and accrual lump sums: based on years worked as a sworn, full‑time officer. Please inquire with Human Resources for more information. Residency requirement: forty‑five (45) minutes from City limits as it exists within the Urban Growth Boundary (UGB). Minimum Qualifications High school graduation or GED and 1 year of work experience required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties of the job. Must be 21 years of age at time of hire. Meet physical standards as set by the Department of Public Safety on Standards and Training (DPSST). Current certified Police Officer in Oregon or another state with reciprocity. Application Process Required materials: City Application, Supplemental Questionnaire, Resume, Cover Letter. Ranking and selection include experience, knowledge, education, responses to the supplemental questionnaire, and meeting minimum qualifications and special qualifications. The process may include oral interviews and skills testing. Final selection requires a background investigation and, depending on the position, psychological, physical, functional, and drug screening. Benefits Summary Health insurance: Full family coverage including medical, prescription, vision, and dental. Employee rates range from $185 to $194 per month. The City contributes $234 per month to a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA/VEBA). Dental insurance: PacificSource with multiple coverage options. Retirement: The City participates in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Employees contribute 6% of their salary; the City pays an equal contribution under the collective bargaining agreement. OPSRP: Eligible employees who work six full months in a qualifying position gain participation in the Oregon Public Service Retirement Plan. Life insurance: Provided to all full‑time employees at one time their annual salary. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance: Provided to all full‑time employees. Long‑term disability: Paid at 60 % of salary with a 90‑day elimination period. Flexible Spending: Employees may set aside pre‑tax funds for medical and dependent care expenses. Social Security and Medicare: The City pays the employer portion of FICA and Medicare. Deferred compensation: A voluntary pre‑tax savings program with up to $24,500 in 2026. Workers compensation: Approved injuries are paid at approximately 66 ⅔ % of regular salary. Holiday compensation: Police personnel receive a holiday compensation bank of 48 hours each July 1 and January 1. Vacation and sick leave: Accrued based on job classification, labor group, and work schedule. Emergency leave: Up to 24 hours or 3 days per calendar year, with sick or vacation leaves available with approval. Employee Assistance Program: Provides up to four confidential visits per issue at no cost. Fitness reimbursement: $40 per month for qualifying membership dues. Educational reimbursement: Partial coverage for accredited courses related to the job, upon successful completion. Direct deposit: Employees may elect to have paychecks deposited electronically. Trial service period: 12 months for most positions; 18 months for certain non‑certified positions.
