General Purpose: Responsible for managing all accounting functions within the credit union. This includes ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining internal controls, and supporting Finance leadership. The role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with other departments.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

• Prepare and review financial statements to ensure accuracy and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
• Develop and maintain internal controls and procedures to safeguard the credit union's assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance and support to ensure efficient department operations. Ensure all statistical and financial reports prepared by accounting staff are completed in an accurate and timely manner.
• Ensure all financial activities comply with federal and state regulations pertaining to the accounting function, including filing necessary reports. Maintain awareness of new trends and advances in the Credit Union industry.
• Coordinate with external auditors during annual audits and examinations. Responsible for preparing audit schedules and supporting documents as deemed necessary by auditors and Finance leadership. Implement audit recommendations as directed by Finance leadership.
• Assist Finance leadership with preparation of the annual Credit Union budget.
• Responsible for managing and directing people and/or resources with fairness and consistency to meet departmental goals. Promote teamwork and encourage process improvement, while creating a positive work environment where employees feel recognized and valued.
• Responsible for evaluating accounting staff, determining talents and development opportunities, and working with accounting staff to improve performance, enhance skills, or create loyalty to the credit union. Conduct timely employee performance appraisals and coaching and effectively resolve employee issues and performance concerns.

Other Duties/Responsibilities:

• Assure the development of individual and department plans and budgets that are consistent with the strategic plan and overall budget.
• Lead or participate in financial projects, such as system implementations or process improvements.
• Perform specific and delegated duties as assigned by the VP Finance or Chief Financial Officer.

Job Knowledge:

• Knowledge of organization's policies/procedures and Credit Union's service philosophy.
• Knowledge of laws and regulations affecting Credit Union operations
• Advanced knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures.
• Knowledge of management techniques to enhance staff productivity and to maintain positive staff morale.

Job Qualifications (Education/Experience):

Job requires a four-year college level of language, math, and reasoning skills. Preferred degree in accounting, finance, or general business. Five years' experience in a related field with equal responsibilities is acceptable. Formal training should be supplemented with continuing education.

Work Environment/Physical Activities

Occasional travel to one of BHFCU's branch locations or attendance at community events may be required.

Physical Requirements

Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 5 lbs. Must be capable of climbing/descending stairs in emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must by capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.

Working Conditions

Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise.

Mental and/or Emotional Requirements

Must be able to perform job functions with supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team. Must be able to read and carry out various instructions and follow oral instructions. Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence. Must be able to perform basic mathematical calculations with extreme accuracy. Must be capable of dealing calmly and professionally with numerous different personalities from diverse cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization and demonstrate highest levels of customer service and discretion when dealing with the public. Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines/requirements for extreme accuracy and quality and/or fast pace. Must be able to effectively handle multiple, simultaneous, and changing priorities. Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on confidential matters. Must be capable of a high degree of mental concentration to interpret and act upon a wide range of situations. Must be capable of a degree of attention to detail.
