School NurseThe school nurse's role is to promote and maintain the health of students so that each can achieve the maximum benefit from his/her education. Major duties and responsibilities include responding to referrals with appropriate action, identifying students with health problems that may affect their school performance, conducting health appraisals including the screening of vision and hearing status, following up on health problems with appropriate communication with the student's parents, teacher, principal, and when required with physicians, health and social agencies, etc. The school nurse also serves as a contributing member of the Eligibility & Planning Team in the identification, evaluation, planning, and placement of students into special education programs, maintains a supply of approved first aid materials in each school, posts approved emergency procedures for sudden illnesses and accidents at each school, maintains a record of immunization status for each student, recommends to the principal the exclusion and readmittance of students with communicable diseases in accordance with state regulations, communicates with parents as appropriate, consults with parents to assist them in understanding and meeting the health needs of their children, consults with the principal concerning safety and health factors in the school environment, serves as a resource person to teachers and principals by suggesting health education materials for classroom instruction, helps with certain facets of health instruction such as first aid, dental health, etc., and other duties assigned by the administrator.Desirable qualifications include knowledge of community agencies dealing with health and welfare, federal and state legislation affecting the school nurse role, health education resources, first aid techniques, and the ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents, work as a team member, and consult others in a constructive and effective manner. Previous school nurse experience is desirable. Required credential is a valid CA School Nurses Credential or equivalent.Required materials include a cover letter, resume, letter(s) of recommendation, copy of credential, and official undergraduate and graduate transcripts (copy may be submitted at time of application, officials are necessary at time of hire).
