Assistant United States Attorney (Criminal Division)

Summary The Eastern District of California is seeking attorneys to serve as Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSA) in the Criminal Division of the Sacramento, Fresno, and Bakersfield Offices. The office represents the Federal government in virtually all litigation involving the United States, including criminal prosecutions for violations of Federal law, civil lawsuits by and against the government, and actions to collect judgments and restitution for victims and taxpayers in the district. Duties Assist in handling a variety of criminal cases, including complex white collar, child exploitation, narcotics, and violent crimes, immigration, and appellate work. Operate in one or more unit areas: Sacramento Office (White Collar Crime, Special Prosecution, Transnational Organized Crime, Violent Crime & Firearms Trafficking, National Security, and Appellate) and Fresno & Bakersfield Offices (White Collar Crime and Narcotics & Violent Crime). Demonstrate flexibility as assignments evolve with training and experience; responsibilities may increase and become more complex over time. Qualifications Required: J.D. degree and active membership in good standing of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction); United States citizenship is required. Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication (fingerprint, credit and tax checks, drug testing) and favorable background investigation. Selective Service registration or exemption must be satisfied for male applicants born after December 31, 1959. Preferred Qualifications Three to five years of experience litigating cases with substantial responsibility for discovery, trial, and appeals. Strong analytical ability, excellent written and oral communication skills, good judgment, and the ability to work professionally with attorneys, paralegals, support staff, and client agencies. Experience with multi-agency task forces, federal grand jury practice, and diverse investigatory techniques; capability to handle complex cases from investigation through trial. Proficiency in legal research and writing, electronic filing, and computer-literate with internet research skills. Education Applicants must possess a J.D. degree. Salary and Benefits Salary ranges are determined based on years of professional attorney experience. Locality pay is included where applicable.
