AoH expanded into Ward8 in 2010 to bring adult basic education, GED preparation, and career training to Southeast DC, and today the campus is part of a school that supports more than 1,000 adult learners a year across its Ward5 and Ward8 campuses — learners who are reclaiming their education, often after years away from the classroom, to build a better future for themselves and their families. That sense of community is central to the Ward8 Principal's role: providing supervision and leadership of all instructional staff (day and evening) and campus operations at the Ward8 site. The Principal directly supervises the Assistant Principal, Administrative Assistant, Manager of Student Success, ParaEducator, and site-based teachers — including two Content Lead Teachers (Math and ELA). The Assistant Principal, in turn, directly supervises the campus's evening adjunct instructional staff. In collaboration with the Principal (Ward5) and the Dean of Student Academic Services, the Principal ensures annual achievement of the goals and priorities of the organization and school performance plan. The Principal leads the campus Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) and focuses on analyzing campus-level data to inform the supports and resources needed to address every learner's academic and social-emotional needs within a rigorous academic program. This role also leads the Ward8 campus's introduction and implementation of AoH's Integrated Education and Training (IET) model — an approach, grounded in the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), that delivers adult basic education and literacy instruction concurrently and contextually with workforce preparation and occupational skills training, so learners build foundational academic skills and career credentials at the same time. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP The Principal, in collaboration with the Principal (Ward5), Dean of Student Academic Services, and CAO, oversees the instructional program to support teachers in meeting the learning needs of every student by providing differentiated, prioritized, aligned, and coordinated supports. Provide instructional leadership to campus-based instructional staff, with specific responsibility for planning, development, implementation, assessment, and improvement. Assist the CAO and Director of Performance, Evaluation, & Research in matters of instructional and academic long-range strategic planning and program evaluation to ensure excellence and high standards. Design and implement a collaborative planning cycle for all instructional staff by content area to ensure consistency in instructional program implementation and to foster teacher leadership in curriculum and instruction. Support and work collaboratively with instructional and program staff to ensure continuity and articulation of the instructional program throughout the school. INTEGRATED EDUCATION AND TRAINING (IET) PROGRAM LEADERSHIP The Principal leads the Ward8 campus's rollout of AoH's IET model, ensuring adult education and literacy instruction, workforce preparation, and occupational skills training are delivered concurrently, contextually, and toward a single set of learning objectives, consistent with WIOA Title II — Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA) standards. Partner with the CAO, Workforce program leadership, and the campus's Math and ELA Content Lead Teachers to design a single, integrated set of learning objectives that connects academic instruction with the occupational skills taught in AoH's career pathway and industry-credential programs (e.g., healthcare, IT). Coordinate co-teaching and team-teaching arrangements between academic instructors and workforce/occupational trainers so that instruction is occupationally relevant and organized to function cooperatively, per IET program design standards. Support Content Lead Teachers in embedding workforce-contextualized content (e.g., healthcare- and IT-related math and reading applications) into core Math and ELA instruction. Monitor and report IET-specific performance measures — including co-enrollment, credential attainment, and transition into employment or postsecondary training — in coordination with the Director of Performance, Evaluation & Research. Build and maintain relationships with workforce training providers and employer partners so that Ward8 programming reflects current labor-market needs and viable career pathways for learners. Support compliance with WIOA Title II reporting requirements related to IET programming, including eligibility documentation and National Reporting System (NRS) data. TEACHER AND STAFF DEVELOPMENT Coordinate and implement cycles of coaching and professional development for all instructional staff, including differentiated support for teachers rated "developing" as determined by the evaluation process for all instructional employees. Conduct routine classroom observations to monitor fidelity to program design and to provide ongoing feedback and support for instructional staff. Provide ongoing instructional support by planning and conducting teacher collaboration sessions with the Principal (Ward5) to ensure professional growth and development for teachers. Engage staff in instructional coaching cycles to improve techniques and practice in data-driven instruction and contextualized, IET-aligned instructional practices. CAMPUS OPERATIONS Provides strategic guidance and support of the Ward8 campus regarding effective and efficient daily school operations. Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer, Director of Admissions, Principal (Ward5), and Dean of Student Academic Services in the development and implementation of the annual student recruitment and retention plan. Oversee the development and implementation of the student attendance and participation plan. Coordinate the work of the campus registrar to ensure appropriate management and collection of student information and records. Provide guidance in the development of the school climate and culture plan, focused on providing learners with a supportive and welcoming learning environment at the Ward8 campus. STAFF SUPERVISION Directly supervise and evaluate the Assistant Principal, Administrative Assistant, Manager of Student Success, ParaEducator, and site-based teachers, including the Math and ELA Content Lead Teachers, setting clear priorities and supporting professional growth. Ensure the Assistant Principal effectively supervises the campus's evening adjunct instructional staff, including coaching, scheduling, and performance support, and coordinate with the Assistant Principal to ensure consistency between day and evening programming. Assist with the recruitment and supervision of teachers, contractors, volunteers, and interns (when applicable) at the Ward8 campus. In partnership with the Volunteer Coordinator, assist with retention of and communication with volunteers and monitoring of volunteers' duties, assignments, and hours. Coordinate substitutes for classes and tutoring as needed, including filling in when others are not available. Conduct regular meetings with Ward8 campus staff, including the Instructional Leadership Team. Collaborate and facilitate, with the Principal (Ward5) and Dean of Student Academic Services, bi-weekly senior academic leadership meetings. PROGRAM DATA AND EVALUATION Work with the accountability team to ensure quality data management and analysis, including collecting and recording demographic and testing data during intake and registration; ensuring accurate and timely collection of attendance records and enrollment data; and ensuring adherence to paper and electronic file maintenance standards. Assist with collecting and recording students' met goals and achievements, including IET co-enrollment and credential-attainment outcomes, as well as other follow-up data. Develop and submit regular programmatic reports, including information needed for newsletters, grant proposals, Public Charter School Board reports, and reports to the AoH Board of Directors. OTHER ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES Attend regular AoH meetings at both AoH locations. When needed, attend meetings or other events at partner organizations or board meetings. Other duties and tasks as assigned by the Chief Academic Officer. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods of time. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate assigned equipment and a computer keyboard. Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone. Reaching overhead and above shoulders to retrieve files and materials. Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching to file materials. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Must be able to withstand extended viewing of computer screens. This is a primarily on-site leadership position at the Ward8 campus; the position will sit in an open/shared office environment with moderate noise levels. WORK ENVIRONMENT Our work atmosphere is professional, friendly, and supportive. Our staff values both teamwork and independence, and we encourage creativity and the sharing of ideas. The noise level in the work environment is conducive to a typical office and school setting.
