ABOUT ART IN THE AFTERNOON  

Art in the Afternoon (AITA) is CVA's arts-based after-school program serving students in kindergarten through 8th grade during the school year. Through hands-on artmaking, creative exploration, homework support, and community building, students develop artistic skills, confidence, problem-solving abilities, and meaningful connections with their peers. 

The program operates Monday through Friday from August through June and provides: 

• Daily visual arts instruction 
• Homework support and independent creative time 
• Outdoor recreation and structured play 
• Exposure to a variety of artistic media, techniques, and art history 
• A welcoming, inclusive environment where students can explore their creativity and build relationships 
• Students are grouped by age and developmental level, allowing instructors to provide engaging, age-appropriate experiences for all participants. 

ABOUT THE ART IN THE AFTERNOON INSTRUCTOR ROLE  

• The Art in the Afternoon Instructor is a part-time role in CVA’s Education Department, helping create a safe, engaging, and inspiring space for young artists. 
• Ideal candidates enjoy working with children, fostering creativity, and building positive relationships with students and families. Visual arts experience is helpful but not required. 
• AITA Instructors supervise students, lead art activities, support homework, and help create a positive classroom environment. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES  

Student Supervision & Care  

• Welcome students as they arrive from local schools and bus routes 
• Ensure students safely transition into the program 
• Maintain a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment 
• Supervise outdoor play, structured recreation, and free-create periods 
• Support positive behavior and conflict resolution using respectful, developmentally appropriate practices 

Art Instruction  

• Implement age-appropriate visual arts lessons 
• Guide students through creative projects using a variety of media and techniques 
• Encourage artistic exploration, experimentation, and problem-solving 
• Foster appreciation for art history, artists, and diverse creative traditions 
• Prepare, organize, and maintain classroom materials and supplies 

Program Support  

• Assist students with homework during designated homework periods 
• Prepare and distribute daily snacks 
• Maintain classroom cleanliness and organization 
• Communicate professionally with families, staff, and community partners 
• Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and program planning as needed 

Teacher Workdays & Special Programming  

• Artventures are hosted at CVA on GCS Traditional Academic Calendar Teacher Workdays 
• Support special events, exhibitions, and youth art showcases throughout the year 

WORK SCHEDULE  

• Monday–Friday2:00 PM – 6:00 PM Approximately 20 hours per week  
• Additional hours for meetings, trainings, special events, or teacher workday programming may be available. 
• Employees are compensated for approved work time that exceeds regularly scheduled hours. 

REPORTING STRUCTURE  

All instructors at the Center for Visual Artists report to the Education Coordinator.  

BENEFITS/SALARY RANGE  

The pay scale for this role is between $15.25-$16/hr. depending on the candidate’s experience. CVA cannot offer healthcare or retirement benefits at this time. CVA employees are eligible for discounts on classes, camps, and artwork for sale. 

IS THIS POSITION FOR YOU?  

This position is for you if you know the importance of visual arts in our lives and communities and you are: 

• Experienced at elementary education, from curriculum development to classroom management 
• A quick, flexible and creative thinker 
• Organized and attentive to details 
• Someone who believes that children are developing humans who are fundamentally good and worthy of respect and care, and who knows (or is interested in learning) principles of Conscious Discipline 
• Art-teaching experience is nice but not required; however, an interest in the visual arts and willingness to explore and learn is essential
