Laboratory Assistant

Collect blood specimens and process specimens for laboratory testing. Receive, sort, and accession specimens, assigning them to the appropriate pre-analytic and analytic workflow. Complete computerized tasks related to patient registration and test order entry, specimen collection, receiving, and processing. Perform basic post-analytic tasks, including distributing reports and storing or retrieving specimens. Complete quality-related tasks such as documentation of work, maintaining a clean and stocked work area, and monitoring pending work. Operate basic pre-analytic lab equipment. Adhere to local, state, and federal regulations and policies to ensure privacy and safety while delivering optimal patient care.

Education: High School Education/GED or equivalent required; Associate/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education and related experience preferred. Licenses/Certifications: Required certifications for phlebotomy or medical laboratory technician as specified.

Essential Functions: Collect blood specimens for various laboratory tests using age-appropriate techniques. Handle and transport lab specimens and provide post-phlebotomy care to patients. Receive specimens for testing and assess them upon receipt to determine acceptability. Process a variety of specimen types to prepare them for analysis, maintaining specimen integrity. Complete computerized tasks for patient registration and test order entry into the lab information system. Prepare and package specimens for transport to other laboratories if necessary. Maintain an adequate inventory of supplies in the work area. Complete basic documentation of pre-analytic and post-analytic work, as well as quality-related tasks. Manage laboratory workflow by monitoring pending work, escalating priority matters, and coordinating recollections. Communicate released and reported results. Route and distribute results appropriately. Store and retrieve specimens efficiently. Answer incoming calls for the laboratory and assist or transfer calls as needed. Clarify ambiguous or unclear test orders with customers. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
