The Director of Space, Facilities and Safety for the School of Medicine provides strategic leadership for the planning, management, utilization, and continuous improvement of academic, research, and education facilities and space resources. The Director is responsible for long-range space planning, facilities operations, safety and regulatory compliance, emergency preparedness, and oversight of capital improvement and modernization initiatives that support the School's research, education, and clinical missions. The Director collaborates with department leadership, UC Davis Health Facilities Planning and Development, Design and Construction Management, Environmental Health & Safety, and other campus and health system partners to develop and implement sustainable facility, space, and safety strategies. This position provides leadership for strategic initiatives, including Aggie Square and future campus development efforts, while ensuring effective stewardship of School of Medicine facilities, resources, and infrastructure in support of institutional priorities and long-term growth. Apply By Date: 9/11/2026 by 11:59pm Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in related field and/or demonstrated equivalent experience and training including business or planning (to demonstrate sufficient analytic capacity) or commensurate work experience in academic facilities management. Five (5) years experience managing space in a research organization with large and diverse space footprint. Management experience. Experience analyzing and synthesizing complex data, developing reports and analytics and presenting finding and complex issues effectively to diverse audiences. Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of medical, biomedical, health services research, lab sciences research and academic space expectations. Strong strategic planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across all levels of the organization. Demonstrated leadership and team‑building capabilities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex information clearly. Ability to work independently, prioritize responsibilities, and manage multiple competing demands. Commitment to teamwork, continuous learning, and professional development. Strong customer service orientation and stakeholder partnership skills. Preferred Qualifications Master's Degree in a similarly related field. Experience in academic health sciences research. Experience with best practices in change management planning and execution as well as trends in medical research space expectations. Experience with health and safety protocols and leadership required to elevate issues identified by safety team. Key Responsibilities 35% - School of Medicine Office of Research Leadership 65% - School of Medicine Office of Research Space & Safety Management Department Overview UC Davis School of Medicine intends to foster top‑tier collaborative research, attract and retain world‑class investigators, and continue to gain national and international visibility through meaningful basic, translational, and clinical research. Strategic use of research facilities is integral to all these goals. This position will be responsible for the strategic planning and tactical execution of research space policies and practice in support of these goals. The School of Medicine currently oversees over 500,000 sq ft of research and related space, including space leased in Aggie Square. The School and Facilities Planning and Development (FP&D) are finalizing a proactive strategic facility plan for research space to enact short and long‑term goals and strategically invest in capital facilities. UC Davis is in a growth phase for facilities and is constructing a new bed tower that will support clinical research as well as direct patient care. Most notably, UC Davis has implemented the first phase of Aggie Square, an initiative that is transforming the Greater Sacramento region by providing state‑of‑the‑art facilities to meet the needs of both the University and industry partners. The School of Medicine is the anchor tenant in Aggie Square, which is located on the Sacramento health campus.
