Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Neuro Med-Surg Acute Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 1 year License: Active IL license Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Must have Level 1 trauma experience. Must have previous travel experience. Must have prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit. Must have heparin gtt experience. Description: The unit consists of 54 beds, including some semi-private rooms. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4-5 during day shifts and 1:5-6 during night shifts. Common diagnoses include stroke, spine surgery, seizures, brain tumors, head injuries, and various neuroscience conditions. Nurses are required to titrate drips, including a heparin titrated drip based on PTT levels. There is a charge nurse available 24/7 who does not take an assignment unless staffing numbers exceed ratios. A house supervisor is also present 24/7. Patient care techs are available, with ratios of 1:9-10 during days, 1:9-10 during evenings, and 1:10-12 during night shifts. High flow oxygen is occasionally used for stable patients, typically for COVID cases. The unit utilizes house-wide telemetry, and nurses are not required to read their own strips. The shift schedule consists of 12-hour shifts, with requests accommodated where possible. Weekend and holiday requirements include working every other weekend and holiday. Nurses may float to other units as needed, but will only perform skills they are competent in and will be paired with a trained nurse from that unit. There is no specific dress code for scrubs, but tattoos must be covered while on duty, and no piercings are allowed except for earrings. Unit-specific orientation consists of two days, including computer training and direct patient care under the supervision of a preceptor.
