Pathology Assistant

Job DescriptionStatus: Full TimeSchedule: Monday - Friday, 6am - 2:30pm or Monday - Friday, 7am - 3:30pmEssential Job Functions:Assures appropriate specimen accessioning and labelingAccurately describes gross anatomic features of routine, complicated surgical specimens, ensuring that all lesions, markings and sutures are mentioned; Sections specimens per departmental protocol; submits entire specimen(s)/representative section(s) for histologic preparation.Performs quality control and quality assurance tests as required.Demonstrated the ability to prioritize and triage specimens.Recognizes testing errors/discrepancies or problems and notifies the appropriate personnel; assists with problem resolution.Operates all instruments/equipment per accepted written proceduresRecognizes and identifies equipment problems and contacts appropriate technical serviceGeneral Job Functions:Maintains all necessary documentation and current logs.Handles and disposes of specimens and chemical waste based on the laboratory's procedure manual and ensure compliance with regulatory policies.Ensures that records are accurate, complete, legible and appropriately filed and stored electronically.Meets acceptable turn-around time and productivity standards for the department.Maintains confidentiality of sensitive patient information.Maintains a clean, neat and orderly workplace including instruments and general laboratory equipment.Physical Job Requirements:Endurance (e.g. continuous typing, prolonged standing/bending, walking lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling)Work requires sitting, standing, and / or walking for periods of up to eight hours.Dexterity of hands and fingersPhysical strength to lift heavy objects, carts, or items, taking frequency and weight into consideration.The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects: Objects 1 to 10 pounds.Physical mobility, which includes movement from place to place on the job, taking distance and speed into account.Balance is maintained during climbing, bending and/or reaching.Physical agility, which includes the ability to maneuver the body while in place.Environmental Risks:Chemicals, Sharps, Latex, and FumesLoud noisesVibrationAllergens: dust, mold and/or pollenMagnetic fieldsBlood-borne Pathogen:Exposure to infectious hazards, blood, body fluids, non-intact skin or tissue specimens.Contact with patient specimens is possible.Education, Certification, Computer and Training Requirements:Master's Degree in Pathology Assistant (PA) or Medical Degree distinction, preferred. Bachelor's Degree or a higher degree in a NAACLA accredited Pathologists' assistant program.Valid New York State Licensure as a Pathology Assistant (PA), and PA (ASCP) certificate, required.Minimum of 2-4 years' experience, 5-8 years preferred.Must have experience with a Laboratory Information System.Travel:None RequiredPay Range: $37.69 - $47.12 HourlyThe provided compensation range is based on industry standards and salary determinations will be made based on numerous factors including but not limited to years of experience and location of position.
