Anne Arundel County, Maryland
Bureau: Behavioral Health Services | Recovery Community Support Services
Full-Time County Contractual Position open to all qualified candidates. Location: 711 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401 and 122 North Langley Road, Suite A & B, Glen Burnie, MD 21060 Hours: 11:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. Benefits: Participation in the County's group health plan including prescription, dental, and optical, paid holidays and sick leave. Optional deferred compensation program at employee's own expense. Job Description
Nature of Work: Engage with overdose survivors after an overdose, provide them with harm reduction resources, and connect them to treatment or peer support services. These outreach efforts are based on a list of overdose survivors provided by the Anne Arundel County Police Department. The aim is to ensure that survivors receive support from the recovery community, access harm reduction resources and are linked to treatment, thereby encouraging them on their path to recovery. The primary objective is to eliminate barriers and enhance access to high-quality, client-centered and culturally competent care throughout Anne Arundel County. Peers play a crucial part in reducing the risk of overdose and improving the overall health and wellness of people who use drugs. Facilitate care, streamline communication with other entities in the county's health care system and ensure that participants receive the ongoing care they need. As a non-clinical, peer-based leader, engage, educate and empower individuals to make significant life changes that maximize harm reduction efforts, minimize adverse consequences, reduce risky behaviors, and promote better health, social and economic outcomes. Maintain accurate documentation in the Welligent system, which includes writing progress notes and completing necessary participant forms. Collaborating effectively with health care teams will be essential to ensure timely follow-ups and comprehensive support. 90% of shifts will be spent on-site at the hospital, engaging directly with community members. Key responsibilities include monitoring the status of referrals to guarantee a seamless process, conducting regular follow-ups with participants and providing consistent support throughout their recovery journey. Document and address discharge procedures promptly and accurately. Deliver targeted education and outreach, both individually and in group settings, covering the full spectrum of services within the substance use continuum of care. Performance will be reviewed and evaluated by your supervisor to ensure the highest standards of excellence. Maintain accurate records in Welligent, a cloud-based electronic health record system, documenting all interactions with participants and ensure compliance with required training. Responsibilities may include additional tasks as assigned by a supervisor or management.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or Equivalency (GED)
Experience: At least two years of sustained recovery from a substance use disorder. Familiarity with treatment and community resources that support recovery from addictive diseases and co-occurring behavioral health disorders. Knowledge of harm reduction, social services and health resources. Experience working with marginalized communities. No current criminal justice system involvement. Behavioral Health Services will consider the length of time since the last conviction and the type of crime.
License or Certification: Individuals in this position are required to obtain a Certified Peer Support Specialist Certification within 18 months from the date of hire from the Maryland Addictions Professional Certification Board. Must complete any additional training that is deemed necessary and appropriate to maintain the required certification.
Notes: May be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in Maryland and have access to a personal vehicle. Work may involve exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings when doing work in the community. Will be working with individuals who may not be feeling well. There is a potential for emotionally volatile situations to occur, including unpleasant hygiene issues.
Desired or Preferred Qualifications: Able to multitask in a fast-paced environment. Excellent time management, organizational, written and oral communication skills. Able to work independently and on a team. Have an understanding of Anne Arundel County resources. Be proficient with Microsoft Office, Excel and electronic medical records. Be proficient with Google Suite, Excel and electronic medical records. Ability to maintain effective peer recovery relationships with participants and other members of the team.
