Senior Internal Auditor

Overview Senior Internal Auditor role within the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). The Senior Internal Auditor creates, manages, executes, and reports on high-risk audit and consulting projects. The position will primarily focus on operational audits but may also be assigned to audit other non-financial topics. Travel to colleges, Shared Services Center, and System Office for audits is required as needed. Responsibilities Conduct risk assessments for assigned audits and develop and conduct new audit programs, including areas not previously audited at the VCCS. Execute internal audits and consulting projects with attention to high-risk areas; prepare and review audit workpapers to ensure alignment with objectives and support for conclusions. Develop summaries and reports presenting findings and recommendations clearly and concisely, with minimal need for intervention from senior management. Lead or conduct special projects and investigations as needed; work collaboratively with college leadership teams and subject matter experts. Maintain open and collaborative relationships with auditees and stakeholders to foster teamwork beyond the immediate team. Qualifications Knowledge: Advanced knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices. Advanced knowledge of state financial regulations, processes, and systems. Advanced knowledge of all phases of automated accounting systems. General knowledge of the auditing process. General knowledge of the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing (Standards) and the Code of Ethics by the IIA. General knowledge of project management techniques and best practices. General knowledge of fraud and IT terminology, concepts and practices. Skills: Proficient with Zoom, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams; willingness to learn additional applications. Proficient with information systems including administrative and student information systems. Abilities: Analyze complex financial transactions, spreadsheets, statements, reports, contracts, and agreements for conformity with applicable regulations and policies. Use research and interview techniques to gather information; conduct risk assessments using various methods. Develop new audit programs for areas not previously audited at the VCCS. Prepare and review audit workpapers to support conclusions; prepare summaries and reports for management. Work effectively with all levels of staff and management, especially college leadership and subject matter experts. Lead or participate in special projects and investigations as required. Education and Experience A combination of relevant experience and education providing the required level of knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the functions of the job. Special Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May assist the agency or state government in the event of emergencies. Travel and Work Environment Travel as required to colleges, Shared Services Center, and System Office for audits. Additional travel may be required for conferences or professional development.
