RN Labor and Delivery

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in Labor and Delivery provides specialized nursing care for high-risk and high-volume maternal and newborn patients. This role involves managing labor, delivery, and postpartum care, including newborn assessments and interventions. The nurse collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, supports midwifery and private OB clients, and functions as a baby nurse during deliveries. Strong experience in fast-paced, high acuity environments and electronic fetal monitoring is essential. Responsibilities:

• Provide skilled nursing care to high-risk labor and delivery patients.
• Function as baby nurse during delivery and continue newborn care until transfer to postpartum.
• Perform newborn assessments including eyes, thighs, and administer Vitamin K injections.
• Circulate and provide care during deliveries, excluding circulating role as a hard stop.
• Manage patients receiving Heparin, Insulin, and Magnesium Sulfate treatments.
• Float to postpartum, antepartum, and sister facilities as needed.
• Use EPIC electronic medical records and comply with electronic fetal monitoring protocols.
• Collaborate with midwifery clients, private OBs, and community care clinics.
• Adhere to AWHONN guidelines for staffing and patient care.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license with at least 1 year of high-risk labor and delivery experience.
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification.
• Experience with electronic fetal monitoring and EPIC documentation system.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, high acuity labor and delivery environment.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification.
• AWHONN Advanced and Intermediate certifications.

Special Considerations:

• Must work every other weekend and holidays as needed.
• Float requirement to postpartum, antepartum, and sister facilities providing mother/baby care.
• First-time labor and delivery nurses accepted with pre-approved time off on a case-by-case basis.
• Compliance with AWHONN staffing guidelines and unit-specific protocols.
• Hard stop requirements: no screening for circulating roles; must provide newborn care during deliveries.

Scheduling:

• Schedule is posted every 6 weeks and designed to meet unit needs.
• Typical shifts include day and potentially night coverage in a 31-bed labor and delivery unit.
