Director of Installation – Landscape Construction
Parterre Garden Services
North Billerica, Massachusetts
Full-time
Salary: $120,000-$130,000 per year, plus performance bonus and company vehicle
About Parterre
Parterre Garden Services is a full-service residential landscape company specializing in landscape design, construction, fine gardening, ecological services, and irrigation and lighting.
We build and care for distinctive residential landscapes throughout Greater Boston and Northern New England. Our work includes complex, design-driven projects involving masonry, grading, drainage, planting, irrigation, lighting, pools, structures, and coordination with builders, architects, landscape architects, engineers, and specialty contractors.
We are seeking an experienced Director of Installation to lead and grow our landscape construction division.
This is a senior leadership role for someone who combines strong construction knowledge with financial discipline, team leadership, estimating experience, and the ability to build lasting client and professional relationships.
The Opportunity
The Director of Installation is responsible for the leadership, growth, financial performance, and successful execution of Parterre’s landscape construction and enhancement work.
The role spans estimating, preconstruction, business development, scheduling, project oversight, team development, and divisional planning.
The successful candidate will inherit an established team and strong portfolio of high-quality residential work, while also helping shape the next stage of the division’s growth. This includes strengthening systems, developing leaders, improving estimating and project turnover, building external relationships, and helping determine the future structure of the team.
This is not simply a senior project management role. It is an opportunity to lead and help build a growing division.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the Division
- Provide overall leadership, direction, and accountability for the Installation division.
- Develop annual and seasonal operating plans based on backlog, staffing, capacity, and financial goals.
- Establish clear priorities and maintain a realistic production plan.
- Lead regular project, staffing, scheduling, and financial reviews.
- Communicate performance, risks, resource needs, and recovery plans to company leadership.
- Build a culture of professionalism, craftsmanship, safety, accountability, and collaboration.
Support Sales, Estimating, and Preconstruction
- Participate directly in estimating landscape construction and enhancement opportunities.
- Review plans, scopes, quantities, labor assumptions, material costs, subcontractor pricing, schedules, and production methods.
- Identify constructability concerns, scope gaps, allowances, exclusions, and project risks before proposals are finalized.
- Participate in client meetings, site visits, proposal reviews, and project presentations.
- Support value engineering, project phasing, and budget alignment.
- Help ensure that commitments made during estimating and sales are understood and executable by the production team.
Deliver Projects Successfully
- Oversee multiple concurrent high-end residential landscape construction projects.
- Lead project turnover from Design and Sales into production.
- Confirm that projects are sufficiently complete and ready before entering the active schedule.
- Ensure project leaders have clear scopes, budgets, schedules, labor plans, material requirements, and client expectations.
- Monitor project progress, financial performance, quality, and risk.
- Intervene when projects are falling behind schedule, exceeding budget, or failing to meet expectations.
- Provide direct project or field leadership when complexity, staffing, or risk requires senior involvement.
- Ensure projects move efficiently from mobilization through completion, punch list, client acceptance, and closeout.
Manage Financial Performance
- Take ownership of the division’s revenue, gross profit, net profit, backlog, and production efficiency.
- Review estimates and production assumptions before project mobilization.
- Monitor labor, materials, subcontractors, equipment, purchasing, job inventory, billing, and work in progress.
- Identify budget variances early and develop corrective action.
- Protect project margins through strong planning, documentation, procurement, and change-order management.
- Partner with Finance and Administration on billing, reconciliation, receivables, and closeout.
- Use completed-project information to improve estimating and production planning.
Develop the Team
- Lead, coach, and develop project managers, field managers, superintendents, crew leaders, and production personnel.
- Clarify responsibilities and decision-making authority at each level.
- Provide direct and timely performance feedback.
- Recruit, onboard, and retain talented construction professionals.
- Identify future leaders and create meaningful development opportunities.
- Build organizational depth so the division is not dependent on one person.
- Help create new positions and structure as the division grows.
Protect Quality, Safety, and Client Experience
- Maintain Parterre’s standards for craftsmanship, communication, professionalism, and jobsite organization.
- Ensure work conforms to approved plans, contracts, specifications, industry standards, and applicable codes.
- Establish quality control checkpoints throughout construction.
- Promote safe work planning and compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
- Resolve client and project concerns promptly and professionally.
- Support smooth project closeout and transition to Parterre’s ongoing service teams when applicable.
Qualifications
- 15 or more years of progressive experience in landscape construction, residential construction, site development, or a related field.
- 5 or more years of experience leading project managers, field managers, superintendents, crew leaders, or similar production teams.
- Experience managing multiple complex construction projects and a substantial annual backlog.
- Experience in estimating, preconstruction, scope development, or pricing.
- Strong understanding of job costing, scheduling, procurement, change orders, forecasting, and project financial performance.
- Strong working knowledge of landscape construction methods, including grading, drainage, excavation, masonry, planting, soils, irrigation, lighting, and construction sequencing.
- Ability to read and interpret landscape plans, architectural drawings, civil plans, details, specifications, and surveys.
- Experience working with high-end residential clients, builders, architects, landscape architects, or design professionals.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, develop people, solve problems, and hold others accountable.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and construction or landscape-management software.
- Experience with Aspire or similar landscape-management software is preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regularly among project sites.
A college degree in construction management, landscape architecture, horticulture, business, engineering, or a related field is preferred but not required. Significant relevant experience will be strongly considered.
The Right Person for This Role
The strongest candidate will be someone who:
- Understands that excellent construction begins with excellent planning.
- Can move comfortably between an estimate, a financial report, a client meeting, a production review, and an active jobsite.
- Has the construction credibility to earn the confidence of field employees and professional partners.
- Develops people rather than simply directing them.
- Knows when to become directly involved and when to hold others accountable.
- Is motivated by the opportunity to build and shape a growing division.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: $120,000–$130,000, based on experience
- Performance-based bonus opportunity
- Company vehicle
- Health insurance
- Dental insurance
- Vision insurance
- 401(k) with company match
- Paid time off
- Paid holidays
- Professional development support
- Employee referral program
- Company-provided technology and resources
Schedule and Work Environment
This is a full-time, year-round leadership position. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday, with additional availability occasionally required based on project needs, weather, seasonal demands, and client commitments.
The position is based out of Parterre’s Billerica, Massachusetts office and yard and requires regular travel to project sites throughout Greater Boston and Parterre’s broader service area.
