Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Physics Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, CA Type: Full-Time Salary: $102,060 to $113,443 per year Category: Physics Purpose The Department of Physics and Engineering Physics at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, seeks a pool of applicants for two new tenure‑track Assistant Professor positions in experimental and computational physics beginning September 1, 2026. The Department of Physics and Engineering Physics offers distinct B.S. degrees in physics and engineering physics, and graduates about 10–15 majors each year. We seek excellent, dynamic physicists who would work on nationally‑fundable research projects in experimental or computational physics. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field, as well as post‑doctoral research experience. The successful candidates must have the demonstrated ability to teach courses across the undergraduate physics curriculum, be willing to contribute in service commensurate to rank, and demonstrate a strong commitment to establishing and sustaining an externally‑fundable research program that can actively involve undergraduates. The Department of Physics and Engineering Physics is housed in the Sobrato Center for Discovery and Innovation (SCDI), a state‑of‑the‑art teaching and research facility. Required Qualifications Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field Postdoctoral research experience Some teaching experience Excellent physicist, self‑starter, clear communicator, and talented teacher capable of teaching effectively and inclusively at the undergraduate level Ability to work comfortably and effectively in a collaborative and diverse academic environment Ability to build and sustain an active research program that will attract external funding and involve undergraduate students Expected to balance teaching, scholarship, and service responsibilities as a member of the Department and the broader community Responsibilities Teaching Teach lower‑ and upper‑division courses in the major and university core curriculum, as assigned by the chair. SCU is on the quarter system and a typical load is two courses per quarter. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• a) Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively.
• b) Assigning and evaluating written work, projects, and exams that align with course or core learning objectives and providing timely feedback to students.
• c) Holding weekly office hours at times reasonably convenient to students.
• d) Assigning and submitting student grades that are appropriate, accurate, and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline.
• e) Administering numerical and narrative evaluations in each section for all courses.
• 2) Develop and teach courses that contribute to curriculum development in the relevant degree program and/or the university core.
• 3) Participate in assessment of student learning for courses in the department.
• 4) Provide informed advice and mentoring to undergraduate students.
• 5) Fulfill other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or by the Physics Department Chair.

Research Develop a sustained research program at SCU, as per the department scholarship standards that will contribute to the inquisitive climate in the department, result in the publication of peer‑reviewed papers, and attract external funding. Strong preference will be given to candidates whose research program can accommodate participation of undergraduates. SCU offers significant support to early‑career faculty in the development of their program of research or creative work. All new faculty will be assigned mentors, placed into a cohort learning community with other new faculty, and offered faculty retreats, workshops, and numerous professional development opportunities to build their programs of research/creative work. Service Provide effective service to the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics, the College, the University, and profession through contributions other than teaching and scholarship such as service on committees, participation in professional organizations and activities, and community service performed by virtue of professional expertise or association with the university as appropriate to rank and experience.
