Senior/Staff Software Engineer - Edge

Responsibilities

• Shape the architecture of edge devices and the cloud systems that orchestrate, monitor, and update them.
• Solve ambiguous systems problems involving resident location modeling, fall detection, sensor fusion, and unpredictable third-party hardware.
• Build diagnostic tooling for hardware deployed in the field.
• Perform remote troubleshooting across network, hardware, and software issues.
• Collaborate with other Sage teams to deliver end-to-end solutions.
• Review code, lead design discussions, mentor engineers, and help set the organization’s technical bar.

Requirements

• At least 7 years of professional experience working with complex backend systems is typically expected, with depth and range valued over a strict number.
• Strong understanding of Linux/Unix systems, including hands-on debugging and systems analysis.
• Deep experience in at least one programming language, such as Java, C++, Rust, Go, Python, or C#.
• Strong computing fundamentals and the ability to reason about memory, concurrency, and performance at a lower level.
• Working knowledge of networking and the behavior of systems when devices disconnect or connections fail.
• Demonstrated technical curiosity through side projects, open source, a home lab, technical hobbies, or self-directed learning.
• Experience leading a technical effort from an ambiguous problem to a real outcome and making tradeoffs under uncertainty.
• Preferred experience includes RF communication, embedded hardware, customized Linux distributions, edge/cloud architecture, OTA updates, fleet management, and AWS, GCP, or Azure.
