Freelance Content Creator (Overheard New York)

The Role

Overheard New York is looking for a freelance Content Creator to help drive our day-to-day NYC content. This person will ideate, write, produce, and publish content that feels unmistakably “Overheard”. Quick-witted, culturally plugged-in, and ultra-relatable, while keeping every post feeling native to New York City.

You'll work across written editorial, social-first video, and supporting formats to keep the Overheard New York feed fresh, funny, and dynamic. This is a project-based / freelance role ideal for someone who lives and breathes internet culture, moves fast, and can turn everyday NYC moments into scroll-stopping content.

You'll collaborate closely with the Editor, Social Leads, and the broader Overheard team, contributing ideas in pitch meetings, helping build new formats, and upholding brand consistency across platforms.

Responsibilities

Publish NYC Content

• Write and publish original, on-voice content for Overheard New York on a consistent schedule.
• Write sharp, witty, brand-aligned captions, headlines, copy, and scripts in the Overheard voice, tailored to a New York audience.
• Overflow-publish on the city-agnostic Overheard pages as needed to help maintain pacing and voice consistency.
• Ensure every post feels platform-native and culturally relevant to New Yorkers specifically — neighborhoods, subway culture, NYC-specific humor and references.

Video Production + Editing

• Shoot, edit, and package low-lift short-form videos using an iPhone or consumer-grade equipment.
• Maintain a nimble, social-first production style that matches Overheard's pace and aesthetic.

Content Ideation + Development

• Bring fresh ideas to pitch meetings for editorial posts, video franchises, and comedic formats rooted in NYC culture.
• Have an instinct and dedication to testing new formats and content styles.

Brand + Voice Stewardship

• Uphold Overheard's tone, POV, aesthetics, and writing style across every asset.
• Stay on top of internet culture, trending humor formats, and NYC conversations to keep the account relevant and timely.
• Partner with Creative, Social, and Editorial teams to support launches and content experiments.

Quality + Process

• Maintain high editorial standards for accuracy, clarity, and comedic alignment.
• Stay organized across a fast-moving content pipeline and deliver on deadlines.
• Contribute to evolving best practices and creative playbooks as Overheard New York grows.

Qualifications

• 2–4 years of experience in editorial, social content creation, media, publishing, entertainment, or a similar creative field.
• Exceptional writing skills with a comedic sensibility, able to nail Overheard's specific voice (quick, sharp, observational, irreverent, but never try-hard).
• Deep familiarity with New York City: neighborhoods, culture, and the conversations locals are having.
• Proven ability to ideate and execute social-first content across Instagram and TikTok.
• Comfortable shooting and editing video on iPhone or consumer-grade equipment.
• Strong understanding of meme culture and internet trends, and how to translate everyday NYC moments into compelling content.
• Highly organized, able to manage multiple content streams and hit deadlines independently.
• Collaborative and communicative, excited to pitch, brainstorm, and build new formats.
• Bonus: familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut, or other lightweight video editing tools.

Engagement Details

• Freelance / project-based; hours and cadence to be scoped with the Editor based on content volume.
• Remote-friendly, with regular presence in New York City for on-the-ground content capture.
