Shriners Children's St. Louis is seeking an experienced, mission-driven physician leader to serve as Chief of Staff - Pediatric Orthopedics.
This is an opportunity to lead dedicated medical teams, maintain an active surgical practice, and help shape the continued growth of a respected pediatric orthopedic program. The Chief of Staff will advance clinical excellence, operational performance, quality, education, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration while ensuring that children and their families receive coordinated, compassionate care.

THE LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY
The Chief of Staff serves as the primary administrative liaison between the orthopedic department and hospital executive leadership, ensuring that departmental operations remain aligned with organizational priorities.
This physician leader will oversee clinical governance, physician development, departmental operations, quality and compliance, academic affairs, and strategic initiatives. The Chief will also provide executive support to physicians and Advanced Practice Providers while continuing to demonstrate excellence within their surgical specialty.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership and operations:
Represent the orthopedic department and medical staff to executive leadership, the Board of Governors, and hospital committees Align departmental operations and strategic plans with hospital and organizational objectives Oversee physician recruitment, credentialing, training, performance evaluations, and professional development Guide clinical scheduling, patient flow, staffing, and resource allocation Collaborate with hospital administration and organizational leadership on departmental budgets, contracts, and expenditures Strengthen relationships with the local medical staff, sponsoring Shrine Temples, and the wider medical community Support medical staff governance, bylaws, hospital regulations, and organizational policies Ensure the timely and accurate completion of medical records Quality, education, and research:
Lead departmental growth initiatives, quality improvement, and clinical outcomes tracking Promote patient safety, regulatory compliance, and evidence-based clinical practices Collaborate with surgeons, nurses, therapists, social workers, and support staff to provide coordinated care Support resident and fellow education, continuing medical education, and interdisciplinary team development Promote research and support the academic and scholarly work of faculty and staff Address patient and family concerns and help facilitate appropriate resolution Ensure compliance with legal, ethical, regulatory, and hospital-specific requirements Clinical practice:
Maintain quality and competency within the physician's surgical specialty Balance personal surgical activity with the leadership needs and overall goals of the hospital QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have:
An MD or DO from an accredited medical school Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency in orthopedic surgery or neurosurgery Fellowship training in pediatric orthopedic surgery or pediatric spine surgery Eight to ten years of clinical practice in orthopedic or spine surgery, preferably in a pediatric setting Five to seven years of progressive leadership experience in clinical operations, administration, or physician leadership Eligibility for active, unrestricted medical licensure in Missouri Eligibility for active DEA registration BLS for Healthcare Providers and PALS certification Eligibility for hospital credentialing and clinical privileges Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare operations, clinical quality improvement, regulatory compliance, and physician workforce management A proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and advance clinical and operational excellence Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills A commitment to pediatric healthcare, patient advocacy, and service excellence A high level of professionalism, discretion, and ethical integrity Orthopedic candidates must be board-certified through the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery with subspecialty training in pediatric orthopedics.
Candidates with a neurosurgical background must be board-certified through the American Board of Neurological Surgery with subspecialty training in pediatric neurosurgery.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
An advanced degree in healthcare administration, business administration, public health, or a related field, such as an MBA, MHA, MPH, or CPE Experience in academic medicine, research administration, or graduate medical education COMPENSATION
The annual compensation range is $634,044.32-$1,177,510.88. Compensation is determined by relevant experience and departmental equity.
