Staff Product Designer, Design Systems

Job Overview Turo’s design system spans iOS, Android, and web. It currently has uneven coverage and team members often work around it instead of using it. As a staff product designer on the design systems team, you will transform the system into the default starting point, building an intuitive, high‑quality foundation that teams reach for naturally. Your work will support both daily design activities and future AI integration, ensuring Turo’s design language scales effortlessly. Responsibilities Audit & Analysis – Examine all product touchpoints to identify where the design system drifts or falls short. Unravel overlapping root causes and implement high‑leverage fixes that benefit multiple teams. Component Lifecycle & Governance – Manage versioning, documentation, and deprecation of components. Establish release cadences and migration paths so product teams can plan confidently. System Architecture & Legibility – Define component, token, and pattern naming and structure so designers and AI agents can locate what they need quickly. Produce clear, high‑quality documentation for both humans and automation tools. Quality Standards & Accessibility – Set and enforce standards for interaction, visual detail, accessibility (WCAG2.1AA minimum), and platform fidelity, raising the bar through critique, education, and example. Cross‑Functional Partnership – Provide office hours, pairing sessions, and review contributions. Advise teams on patterns the system doesn’t yet cover and decide when a design becomes a global standard. Education & Advocacy – Conduct workshops, author guidance, and give constructive critique to elevate team fluency in the system. Design‑to‑Code Integration – Build coded starting points, token demos, and high‑fidelity prototypes that bridge Figma and production. Collaborate with engineers to validate ideas early and ensure system improvements scale across all platforms. Qualifications 8+ years designing product experiences, focusing on evolving design systems into trusted foundations. Track record of shipping components and patterns adopted by multiple mobile and web product teams. Deep fluency with tokens, component architecture, variants, and Figma systems craft. Experience with agentic coding tools, MCPs, or equivalent AI workflows. Model of design system governance and the ability to defend decisions on ship, extend, or say no. Partnering experience with platform engineers on implementation, parity, and release cadence. Evidence of scaling impact through mentorship, workshops, and written guidance. Strong written communication suitable for junior designers, staff engineers, and agents. Bonus: experience building and maintaining linters for design teams; exposure to token pipelines, Style Dictionary, or equivalent cross‑platform token infrastructure; history contributing to accessibility standards or tooling.
