Job Summary & General Information
Under general direction of the Parks Supervisor II, performs a variety of semi-skilled general maintenance including electrical repair, plumbing, mechanical repair, and preventative maintenance, as well as assist with building alteration and repairs in the upkeep and maintenance of City parks and/or other City areas; and operates and maintains specialized equipment related to assignment. Depending on assignment, positions in this classification may have primary responsibility for the upkeep and maintenance of designated parks or other recreational/City facilities; or the operation of specialized equipment in the maintenance of City park turf areas.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation. Maintains buildings and property, tests and repairs electrical fixtures, light bulbs and wiring. Performs minor plumbing and mechanical repairs.
Performs minor repairs on buildings and associated fixtures as well as minor construction, painting or carpentry projects.
Performs a variety of grounds keeping duties which include litter control, ball field preparation, and janitorial duties as needed.
Operates parks equipment such as tractor, backhoe, loader, dragging machine, mower, and other related maintenance vehicles.
Instructs Parks Maintenance Technicians in how to operate parks related machinery and equipment and completes routine service procedures.
Follows all safety guidelines in operating equipment; ensures work completed meets applicable codes and regulations.
Monitors and performs routine preventative maintenance and repairs to parks related vehicles, machinery, and equipment.
Oversees the operation and maintenance of the City pool and compliance with the established pool operation and maintenance procedures and practice; monitors pool chemical levels and ensures health and safety procedures are followed.
Performs a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems; adjust and maintain timers and controllers, repair sprinkler heads and lines; locate and repair water breaks, refer problems to higher level park maintenance staff as required.
Processes work orders and maintain a daily log of all work and repairs performed.
Communicates with co-workers, immediate supervisor, other City personnel, and the public in order to provide assistance, receive instructions, exchange information, and complete daily job related activities.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
Operations, services, and activities of a parks maintenance program.
Plant and turf pests and diseases.
Proper and effective use of a variety of tools, equipment and materials used in park maintenance.
Basic principles and practices used in carpentry, plumbing, and painting.
Mechanics of irrigation and sprinkler systems.
Methods and techniques of planting and caring for turf areas, trees, shrubs, and plants including proper pruning methods.
Methods and techniques of groundskeeping including mowing and fertilizing.
Methods and techniques of applying herbicides and pesticides.
Safety precautions in the use and maintenance of power mowers and other equipment.
Principles and practices of record keeping.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws, and regulations.
Ability to:
Perform semi-skilled and skilled park maintenance work.
Operate a variety of light and heavy equipment, including mowers.
Perform a variety of routine building maintenance tasks including carpentry, plumbing, and painting.
Perform heavy manual labor.
Competently care for plants, shrubs, turf, and trees including properly watering and fertilizing.
Read and interpret plans and diagrams.
Repair fences, playground equipment, and other facilities.
Work independently and assume responsibility for an assigned route.
Maintain records neatly and accurately.
Train less experienced personnel.
Operate and make minor repairs to vehicles, equipment, and power tools.
Perform preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
Safely and accurately perform chemical application functions.
Respond to public inquiries and requests.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work and contribute to a cooperative team effort.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job qualifies.
High School diploma or GED equivalency.
Two years of experience in building maintenance (i.e., carpentry, plumbing and electrical) and grounds maintenance.
Possession of Certified Pool/Spa Operator certification preferred.
Must be willing to work varying hours, including evenings, weekends and/or holidays assigned.
Possession of a valid Georgia Class C driver’s license.
Physical Demands
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in outside areas in all weather conditions, which may include wind, rain and other elements. Continuous walking, reaching and handling; lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Frequent standing, stooping, kneeling and crouching; reaching at and above shoulder height; pushing/pulling, twisting at waist; strong power or pinch grasp; upward and downward flexion of neck, side-to-side turning of neck; lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; pushing/pulling of objects up to 20 pounds. Occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, crawling and fingering of objects and equipment; lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling of objects weighing up to 100 pounds; lifting and pushing/pulling of objects over 100 pounds with assistance only.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read printed documents and to operate equipment.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

Medical, Dental and Vision
Medical: 2 High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) options (HRA and HSA) with lower monthly costs. Dental: no deductibles. Coverage includes preventive, basic, major restorative, and child orthodontia. Vision: eye care and eyewear (contacts, lenses and frames). Laser correction procedures. FSA: Medical and dependent care.
Retirement Health
Medical Coverage: retirees (age 55+ and 10+ yrs. of service) may continue individual coverage up until Medicare eligibility at age 65. Medical Reimbursement: retirees (age 55+ and 15+ yrs. of service) receive a monthly reimbursement benefit as periodically determined by the Pension Board of Trustees.
Retirement
Defined Contributions 401(a): City contributes 10% of employee's annual base pay. Vested benefit accrued at 20% a year, with full vesting after 5 years of service. Deferred Compensation (457) and Matching Contributions: employees may elect to participate at any time. After 1 year of continuous employment, City matches employee's contributions, up to 5%.

10 City Holidays and 1 Personal Holiday upon hire and every Jan. 1st.
Paid Parental Leave
2 weeks paid parental leave for birthmother, spouse and adoptive parents (after 1 year of employment).

Employees can opt to participate in this state-sponsored, tax-advantaged college savings plan.
Tuition Reimbursement
After 1 year of employment, employees may receive tuition reimbursement up to a rate equivalent to 15 credit hours at Georgia State University annually. Reimbursement is based on prior approval, course grades, and annual program funding.

Group Term Life Insurance and AD&D
Employee: 3.5 x annual base pay up to annual maximum. Spouse: $5,000. Child: $2,500. Premiums paid 100% by the City.
Disability Insurance
Short-Term Disability: 66.67% of base pay after 14 days of disability. Long-Term Disability: 60% of base pay after 26 weeks of disability. Premiums paid 100% by the City.
Paid Time Off (PTO)
PTO is provided for rest, recreation, illness and family needs. Hours are accrued bi-weekly.
0.0 - 1.0 yrs of service - 12 days annually
1.1 - 5.0 yrs of service - 18 days annually
5.1 - 10.0 yrs of service - 24 days annually
