Job Summary The Coordinator of Arts and Physical Education Programs provides district-level leadership to ensure high-quality, standards-aligned instruction across the visual and performing arts, music, and physical education programs in Mesa Public Schools. This position supports curriculum alignment, instructional excellence, and program development to foster creativity, wellness, and collaboration in all students in alignment with Mesa Public Schools’ Portrait of a Graduate and Arizona State Standards. The coordinator collaborates with district and regional teams, school leaders, and community partners to promote access, engagement, and achievement in arts and physical education programs across all schools. Key Responsibilities Provide districtwide leadership for curriculum, instruction, and programming in visual arts, music, theater, dance, and physical education. Collaborate with district and regional leaders to align arts and physical education programs with Mesa Public Schools’ Instructional Frameworks and Portrait of a Graduate. Serve as the district liaison for arts and physical education initiatives, coordinating with state, regional, and community partners. Support and mentor arts and physical education specialists to ensure consistent and high-quality instruction across schools. Collaborate with Student Affairs in the planning and communication for districtwide fine arts and physical education events, performances, and showcases. Coordinate systems to ensure arts and PE curriculum alignment with HQIM and state standards. Leadership & Collaboration Plan and facilitate professional learning for arts and physical education teachers, specialists, and coaches. Partner with the Professional Learning & Learning Technology Coordinator to develop and deliver high-quality professional learning aligned with district instructional priorities. Support the use of data, student performance evidence, and program evaluation to improve instruction and curriculum implementation. Coordinate mentoring and leadership development opportunities for arts and PE educators. Curriculum & Instructional Systems Oversee the development, revision, and implementation of arts and physical education curriculum frameworks and pacing guides. Collaborate with specialists to evaluate instructional resources, including digital and performance-based materials. Monitor and support fidelity of curriculum and instructional practices through classroom visits, observations, and feedback. Community & Partnerships Build and maintain partnerships with local arts organizations, universities, recreation programs, and community agencies. Promote student participation in arts, music, and physical education through district communication and community engagement. Represent Mesa Public Schools in community events, state arts and PE advisory councils, and external networks. Program Management & Events Support schools with planning and logistics for district arts and physical education events, including exhibitions, performances, and showcases. Collaborate with the Communications Department to highlight student and teacher accomplishments in the arts and physical education. Resources, Equipment, and Budget Planning Oversee the selection, acquisition, maintenance, and distribution of instructional resources and equipment for visual and performing arts, music, and physical education programs. Develop and implement a long-term strategic plan for arts and physical education resources and equipment, including replacement cycles, upgrades, and innovation initiatives. Collaborate with school and district leaders to develop and monitor annual and multi-year budgets for arts and physical education programs. Partner with Facilities and Operations to plan for appropriate spaces and safety standards for arts and PE instruction, performances, and events. General Perform other duties as assigned to support Mesa Public Schools’ academic goals and Portrait of a Graduate. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field. Valid Arizona Department of Education teaching certificate and SEI endorsement. Minimum of three years of successful classroom teaching experience. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in educational leadership, curriculum and instruction, or related field. Experience in coordinating programs. Experience facilitating professional learning for educators. Knowledge of instructional design, HQIM implementation, and formative assessment practices. Skills & Competencies Deep understanding of curriculum design, artistic and physical development, and instructional best practices in arts and physical education. Ability to develop and sustain district systems that promote artistic creativity, collaboration, and physical wellness. Understanding of state laws, district policies, and compliance requirements of arts and physical education programs. Ability to create systems and structures to balance the needs of schools within a complex system. Ability to design and implement assessment for learning, including performance assessments. Understanding of personalized learning practices and strategies to promote student agency. Skill in designing and facilitating professional learning that builds capacity among adults. Ability to use data to inform instruction and evaluate program effectiveness. Skill in analyzing and interpreting student data to inform instructional decisions. Strong communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills to build capacity across district teams. Excellent organizational and project management skills. Commitment to ensuring rigorous academic outcomes for all students. Model the essential attitudes and skills of Mesa Public Schools’ Portrait of a Graduate. Knowledge of instructional design, assessment, intervention frameworks, and progress monitoring tools. Ability to analyze and interpret data to guide program improvement. Strong facilitation and collaboration skills for working with educators and leaders across grade levels. Excellent organizational and project management skills. Technologically fluent with Microsoft, Google Workspace, Canvas, and related platforms to support data and communication. Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Adaptability and creativity in responding to the evolving needs of educators and students. Deep knowledge of applicable state laws, district policies, and compliance requirements. Work Environment & Physical Requirements Primarily office-based with frequent district site visits. Occasional evening or weekend commitments. Fast-paced, high-stakes environment requiring adaptability and responsiveness. Ability to remain seated for extended periods. Frequent use of hands for typing and handling documents. Occasional standing, walking, bending, and reaching. Ability to lift and carry up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 25 pounds occasionally. Visual acuity for reading and computer work.
