Machine BuilderThis role focuses on building complex custom machinery from the ground up by assembling machined and purchased components, wiring electrical systems, and supporting the full lifecycle of equipment from fabrication through final build. The position operates on a first shift schedule, working Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with additional Saturday hours from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. as needed. The role is based in the Grand Rapids and Plymouth areas, with multiple openings available.ResponsibilitiesAssemble machined and purchased components to build complete machines according to specifications.Build and integrate components required for the proper function of machines such as chassis dynamometers, roll brake testers, centering systems, and non-contact alignment machines.Interpret and follow blueprints, mechanical drawings, and electrical schematics to ensure accurate assembly and wiring.Perform mechanical assembly tasks, including fitting, aligning, and securing parts using appropriate hand tools and equipment.Perform electrical assembly tasks, including routing and terminating wires, and wiring junction boxes in accordance with schematics and standards.Support the assembly and integration of heavy-duty road simulation systems used for vehicle emission testing, ensuring accurate control and repeatability.Assist in the build and setup of dynamic vehicle test equipment, including roll brake testers and vehicle centering systems.Use welding processes such as TIG and MIG, as required, to assemble or modify components and structures.Verify that assembled machines meet functional requirements and are ready for testing and final adjustments.Collaborate with fabrication, CNC, and paint departments to ensure smooth progression of machines from initial fabrication through final build.Use basic hand tools, power tools, and measurement devices safely and effectively during assembly.Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow all safety procedures while working with mechanical and electrical components.Essential SkillsMinimum of 5 years of machine build experience.Ability to build components required for the proper function of complex machines.Basic understanding of blueprints and mechanical drawings.Basic understanding of electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.Ability to wire junction boxes accurately and safely.Proficiency in using basic hand tools for mechanical and electrical assembly.Experience with mechanical assembly, including fitting and aligning components.Experience with electrical assembly, including routing and terminating wires.Ability to read and interpret blueprints and prints for both mechanical and electrical systems.Hands-on experience in machine building in a production or custom machine environment.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience with TIG welding for precision fabrication and assembly.Experience with MIG welding in a manufacturing or machine build environment.Familiarity with chassis dynamometers, roll brake testers, or similar vehicle test equipment.Exposure to laser-based, computerized measurement systems and camera-based alignment systems is beneficial.Comfort working with both mechanical and electrical systems on complex machinery.Strong attention to detail and ability to follow detailed instructions and schematics.Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams such as fabrication, CNC, and paint.Why Work Here?You will join a team that builds highly specialized custom machines from start to finish, offering a clear opportunity to expand your skills and grow your career in machine building. Machines are built entirely in-house, moving from the fabrication shop to the CNC department, then to machine build and paint, allowing you to work within a full cradle-to-grave production environment. The workplace is clean and organized, supporting a professional and efficient build process. The operation runs as a two-shift facility, with this role on first shift, typically Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and additional Saturday hours from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. as needed. You will work with mechanical, electrical, and welding equipment, including hand tools, power tools, and measurement instruments, in a structured and safety-focused setting.Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Grand Rapids, MI.Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $26.00 - $32.00/hr.Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
