Converse University is a private liberal arts university located in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It was founded in 1889 and originally operated as a women's college (called Converse College) before becoming fully coeducational and adopting the name Converse University in 2021.

Converse enrolls just over 1,000 undergraduate students and offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Its campus is about 70 acres in a city setting, and it competes in NCAA Division II athletics as the Valkyries.



Vice President of Enrollment Management Position Summary
In partnership with the President, the Vice President for Enrollment Management is responsible for the overall leadership, development of recruitment and enrollment strategy, and performance of the University's marketing, recruitment, and enrollment management of all undergraduate and graduate programs. The Vice President develops recruitment strategy and oversees the operations of the admissions office for all students, including: undergraduate, non-traditional, transfer, online, graduate, extension programs, and international, and will coordinate with other offices on campus (including the offices of Student Financial Services, Registrar, Institutional Research and Effectiveness, Communications, and Student Development and Success) to ensure a student-focused and seamless approach to the enrollment cycle, as well as efficient and ethical enrollment processes for recruitment and continued enrollment.



Key Responsibilities
Strategic Enrollment Leadership & Institutional Planning

  • Develops and executes a Strategic Enrollment Plan that optimizes the University's position in a highly competitive marketplace, increases our overall visibility, and ensures achievement of the University's enrollment growth and objectives.
  • Provides innovative and inspirational leadership in the development and implementation of plans to increase and diversify student populations in traditional, online, hybrid, non-traditional, extension, certificate, and graduate programs.
  • Grows enrollment and maximizes net revenue to strengthen the academic and co-curricular experience for students and build the reputation of the University as an institution that provides an excellent academic experience.
  • Works with the Board and the President to establish annual recruitment and tuition-offset goals, then meets those goals.
  • Assists with the University's strategic planning activities, with particular attention to areas with enrollment implications.
  • Understands and advocates for the distinctive mission of the University.
  • Participates in the central governance of the University, serving as a member of the senior management team, a principal liaison to the Enrollment and Programs Committee of the Board of Trustees, as well as on selected budget, planning, and special committees as requested.
Enrollment Operations, Analytics, & Student Success
  • Uses data effectively to develop informed goals and processes to improve enrollment and retention.
  • Ensures the effectiveness and efficiency of systems and structures to aid enrollment planning, management, and decision-making.
  • Directs the enrollment and admission marketing research agendas, driving data-based decision making, and adjusts strategy to meet changing market conditions.
  • Coordinates market research and ongoing database and operations management programs. Works closely with the Provost, the Director of Institutional Research & Effectiveness, and the Registrar (APIRR), and others to develop graduate and non-traditional programs that will drive enrollment.
  • Constantly reviews and analyzes the effectiveness of all phases of the enrollment management operation, and revises and strengthens as necessary.
  • Oversees the establishment of application policies and procedures and coordinates the proper evaluation of applicants, serving as a liaison with admission staff and members of the faculty.
  • Provides general coordination and assistance in retention activities in collaboration with the Provost/Student Success liaison.
  • Collaborates across the campus on issues affecting recruitment, admissions, student billing, financial aid, student-athlete recruitment, graduate recruitment, student orientation, and retention.
  • Coordinates the development and implementation of articulation agreements with the APIRR to attract transfer students.
Marketing, Recruitment, & External Relations
  • Plans, organizes, and executes regional, national, and international marketing, communication, and recruitment plans to meet enrollment goals for targeted student populations.
  • Provides leadership and utilizes carefully developed admission literature as well as other marketing and advertising materials in traditional, online, and other formats.
  • Develops and leverages alumni connections to aid student recruitment.
  • Enhances communications with staff and faculty and effectively engages the Converse community in recruitment, enrollment, and retention efforts.
  • Serves in a liaison capacity with internal and external constituencies, including the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, alumni, high school and University counselors, prospective students, and parents to advance enrollment at Converse and to share emerging trends in enrollment management, which may include regular reports as requested.
  • Represents the University in a speaking capacity at on and off-campus student and parent programs; participates in the general functions of the office, including, but not limited to, University/College fairs, admission events, student interviews, school visitations, etc.; and represents the University at regional and national conferences and events regarding enrollment management and services.
  • Collaborate with Intercollegiate Athletics to promote recruitment and retention of student-athletes.
Division Leadership, Financial Stewardship, & Compliance
  • Serves as an effective manager of the division to inspire performance and to meet institutional goals and expectations.
  • Selects, guides, and evaluates professional and support staff; oversees training, orientation, and professional development of staff to ensure ethical, dynamic, accountable, and innovative recruitment in a goal-oriented environment that seeks to increase enrollment in all markets.
  • Develops and manages the annual enrollment management and services budget.
  • Provides leadership in the development and execution of student financial aid policies, procedures, awards, scholarship programs, and budget levels.
  • Assures adherence to state and federal regulations, institution policies, and relevant accreditation standards.
  • Adheres to Converse University, Conference, and NCAA policies and procedures.
Qualifications for Consideration
  • Master's degree, with a strong preference given to candidates with a doctoral degree
  • At least ??5 years of experience in higher education, including enrollment management and the development and management of effective, collaborative, cross-divisional programs and teams
  • At least three years of cabinet-level experience is preferred
  • Ability to implement "state-of-the-art" recruitment, retention, and marketing strategies
  • Must be an effective planner and provide evidence of excellent organization and management skills.
  • Understanding and appreciation of the strategic uses of all resources, including financial aid leveraging, in enrollment management
  • Well-grounded in database enrollment management techniques
  • Adept in leading and managing a staff and in establishing excellent working relationships with the Board of Trustees, president, vice presidents, deans, faculty, staff, alumni, and others in the community
  • Excellent analytical, writing, and speaking skills.
