Reports to: Vice President of Product and UX

Location: Cottonwood Heights, Utah (Hybrid - 3x/week in-office), with regular travel to stores

About the Role

Retail is a growing part of Backcountry's business, and the customer experience across stores and Backcountry.com needs to feel like one brand rather than two systems. As Product Manager, Retail Experience , you will own the product roadmap for everything that bridges our physical stores and the digital experience.

At six to twelve months, success looks like measurable growth in cross-channel revenue and store conversion, a unified retail experience customers can feel, and a roadmap that store operations, merchandising, and engineering trust and rally behind. You will be building for a store fleet that will look different a year from now than it does today.

This is a lean team. You will own a lot, move fast, and make decisions with full end-to-end responsibility.

What You'll Do

• Own the product roadmap for retail customer experience, spanning the in-store journey and the digital touchpoints that connect stores to Backcountry.com.
• Build and improve cross-channel experiences including buy online pick up in store, ship from store, store inventory visibility on product pages and search, and in-store returns.
• Extend loyalty and customer recognition into the store so that membership, points, and order history work the same at the register as they do online.
• Partner with store operations and store teams to understand how stores actually run, then translate that into product requirements that hold up on a busy Saturday.
• Design the customer experience for store services such as rentals, fittings, and tuning — including how customers book, pay, and pick up.
• Define success metrics for retail initiatives, instrument them properly, and use data and experimentation to decide what to build next.
• Work with engineering on the systems behind the experience — point of sale, inventory, order management, and customer data — and make smart calls about what to integrate versus what to rebuild.
• Create repeatable playbooks and requirements so that bringing a new store or group of stores onto the experience is a known process rather than a one-off project.
• Partner across engineering, design, merchandising, marketing, analytics, and operations to turn business goals into shipped product.

Required Qualifications

• 3–5+ years of product management experience.
• Experience owning retail, omnichannel, or in-store customer experience, or closely adjacent commerce products.
• Working understanding of retail systems such as point of sale, inventory and order management, and customer data platforms.
• Demonstrated impact on conversion, revenue, or operational efficiency with measurable results.
• Strong analytical and experimentation skills, with experience using GA4, Looker, SQL, or similar tools.
• Ability to ship iteratively and keep momentum through rapid release cycles.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders, including store leadership and field teams.
• Willingness to travel to stores regularly and to work onsite three days per week in Utah.

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands-on experience using AI tools within product workflows — pulling live context from project and documentation tools, prototyping instead of slide-decking, and automating repetitive work.
• Experience launching product in new stores, new markets, or newly integrated businesses.
• Experience with rental, service, or appointment-based retail models.
• Background in outdoor, specialty, or hardgoods retail.

Interview Process

1. Recruiter Screen - A 30-minute conversation with our recruiting team to align on the role, your background, and what you are looking for.
2. Take-Home Challenge - A short AI or product building exercise so we can see how you approach problems and execution.
3. Hiring Manager Interview - A deep dive with the Vice President of Product and UX on your experience, product mindset, and operational thinking.
4. Leadership and Store Operations Interviews - Conversations with the partners you will work with most closely across store operations and senior leadership.
5. In-Person Interview - We'd like to meet you, and you should see a store. Details and logistics will be arranged with your recruiter.
6. Reference Checks - Conducted in parallel with the final stages where possible.
7. Offer - We move quickly for the right candidate.
