Director of Development
$90k - $110kNew Mexico Climate Investment Center
About the Job About the New Mexico Climate Investment Center: The New Mexico Climate Investment Center (NMCIC) is New Mexico's first green bank, leveraging public and private capital to finance projects that reduce emissions, lower energy costs, strengthen communities, and create economic opportunity. Our collaborative team is passionate about advancing innovative climate solutions that make a lasting impact across the state. Join us and help build a more sustainable, resilient future for New Mexico. Job Opening — Director of Development New Mexico Climate Investment Center · New Mexico’s Green Bank Reports to: CEO · Santa Fe, NM (hybrid onsite/remote) · $90k-110k commensurate with experience NMCIC seeks a senior Director of Development to build and scale the fundraising engine of an impactful nonprofit green bank with strong early momentum and a differentiated, mission-driven platform. The Opportunity Proven momentum. In our first two years, NMCIC raised over $30 million in capital (grants, loans, and state commitments) and built a project pipeline exceeding $75 million in capex across our focus sectors. The next stage. NMCIC is moving from seed stage to build stage. Our 2026–2028 Strategic Plan targets roughly $25–$30 million in new commitments over three years and a 3–4x increase in philanthropic and investor capital, shifting the mix from ~95% government-sourced toward roughly 40% by 2028, on a path to $50–$60M AUM by 2028 and $80M+ by the early 2030s. Your mandate. Lead that diversification and anchor a growing development function as the team scales from five FTEs upward in an organization with traction, a strong board, and the only dedicated agricultural lending program at any green bank in the country. About NMCIC Our mission is to accelerate a just transition to a carbon-neutral economy by investing in projects that reduce emissions, other climate impacts, and energy burdens for disadvantaged communities. We seek to be catalytic and non-extractive in how we deploy loan capital, partnering with other lenders to coinvest and with our borrowers through flexible terms and technical assistance, and building relationships with trusted community partners in each program area to learn from them. Our lending is organized around three program areas: Renewable Energy: Financing for New Mexico developers of small to mid-sized renewable energy projects (solar, battery storage, and microgrids) that lower energy cost burdens or increase resilience in low-income and disadvantaged households, with wealth building through community and nonprofit ownership. Building Decarbonization: Energy efficiency work primarily on affordable and workforce housing developments, nonprofit organizations, and small businesses. We prioritize smaller, local developers who are mission-aligned and keeping capital in the community. We serve individual homeowners through our RISE NM program, which provides financing to homeowners based on their ability to repay. Agriculture: Designed to accelerate New Mexico’s transition to regenerative, climate-resilient agriculture: capital for land access, infrastructure, and market alignment that helps farmers and ranchers build healthy soil, increase biodiversity, and reduce fertilizer reliance, sequester carbon, retain more water, cut emissions, and strengthen drought resilience. Position Summary The Director of Development will lead the strategic effort to scale NMCIC’s fundraising engine, shaping and driving a multi-pronged strategy for a financially sustainable organization. The role advances NMCIC’s strategic imperatives to diversify funding sources. Working in close partnership with the CEO, the Capital Development Committee of the Board, and the broader team, the Director will raise both operating and investment (lending) capital across: Government grants and loan capital; Foundations, grants and program-related and mission-related investments (PRIs / MRIs); High-net-worth donors, including donor-advised funds (DAFs), planned giving, bequests, and charitable remainder trusts. Core Responsibilities Lead development and execution of the strategic fundraising plan across state government, high-net-worth individuals, national and NM foundations, and impact investors; Refine the capital development framework (methodology, sequencing, goal-setting) into an actionable annual plan; Advise on fundraising “win” conditions and decision frameworks to prioritize across and within channels; Evaluate fundraising vehicles, including considerations of structure, cost, and capacity; Lead day-to-day execution across fundraising workstreams, team members, the Capital Development Committee, and consultants. Pipeline, Operations, and Grants Build and maintain the prospective funder pipeline, reconciled into a unified, deduplicated pipeline; Administer the fundraising CRM (Monday.com or other platform, e.g. Salesforce Nonprofit, CiviCRM, Grist), enforce data standards and pipeline visibility, and lead migration to a permanent platform if warranted; Manage the grant pipeline, writing and coordinating compelling applications, supervising or collaborating with contracted grant writers, and maintaining application templates; Convene and lead a standing capital development meeting, driving deliverables and team momentum; Assist with coordination of the Capital Development Committee and serve as primary staff liaison. Narrative, Impact, & Communications Refine and shape messaging frameworks, theory of change, strategic narrative, and public positioning with the CEO and leadership team; Partner with NMCIC staff to refine and apply impact metrics (climate change mitigation and adaptation, GHG emissions reduced/avoided, energy burden reduction, and benefit to low-income and disadvantaged communities/LIDAC), and translate results into compelling funder and investor reporting; Advise on public statements, op-eds, and sign-on letters in conjunction with the communications lead; Identify strategic leverage points including public narrative, donor mobilization, and stakeholder engagement. Coalition & Stakeholder Leadership Serve as lead for strategic stakeholder development and outreach across all fundraising channels and Advise on outreach involving board, committee, and staff to institutional partners, philanthropy, and state government; Coordinate with coalitions of peer green banks on joint fundraising strategies and identify the best opportunities for NMCIC. Qualifications Required 10+ years of experience leading development for nonprofits, preferably in impact investing, clean energy, or regenerative agriculture financing; Demonstrated success designing fundraising strategies and raising capital from foundations, impact investors, and governments; Expertise in engaging multiple stakeholders and varied strategies to pursue a shared goal; Exceptional strategic judgment and ability to navigate complex political and reputational dynamics; Strong communications instincts and experience shaping public narrative in high-profile campaigns. Preferred Significant experience in New Mexico; Blended/catalytic capital and fund-structure design (PRIs/MRIs, co-investment); CDFI, green bank, or community finance background; Carbon finance or environmental markets experience. #J-18808-Ljbffr
