About the Training Program

The Impact Fund’s training program includes our annual Class Action Conference (every spring in San Francisco), Summer Webinar Series (online), Class Action Training Institute (every fall in Berkeley & Los Angeles), and online and in-person trainings throughout the year. Our current online and in-person training curriculum focus on practical skills and topics relevant to impact litigation, such as Effective Legal Writing, Building Your Case for Attorneys’ Fees, Writing Effective Amicus Briefs, Class Action Basics, Supervising Legal Writing, and Litigation 101: Welcome to Lawyerland. The Impact Fund is looking to continue developing its training program to support a wide range of public interest impact litigators from legal nonprofits and private firms. About the Training Director Role

The Training Director leads the Impact Fund’s training program and is our primary trainer on legal standards for class and impact litigation, changes to the law, legal strategy, and practical litigation skills. The Training Director designs the content for the Class Action Conference, Summer Webinar Series, Class Action Training Institute, and other trainings; invites speakers; and ensures all State Bar MCLE requirements are satisfied.

We are looking for someone with class action expertise who is excited to help build the impact litigation capacity of the public interest community by developing and delivering innovative, interactive, and inclusive trainings.

The Training Director is a member of the Impact Fund’s organizational leadership team and is the primary supervisor for the Program Associate. It is an exempt full-time (100%) or reduced schedule (80%) position that reports to the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities:

• Planning substantive programming for the Impact Fund Class Action Conference, Summer Webinar Series, and Class Action Training Institute
• Updating and conducting individual online and in-person trainings
• Building out the training curriculum to include more topics and serve more members of the public interest legal community
• Serve as a member of the Impact Fund’s organizational leadership team, contributing to organizational culture, planning, finances, and other operations
• Working with and supervising the Program Associate in training activities
• Maintaining the Impact Fund’s status as a California State Bar-certified multi-activity provider and ensuring compliance with all State Bar rules governing continuing legal education
• Speaking on panels and at conferences on topics relevant to the Impact Fund’s work
• Working with the development team to support grant applications, compliance, and reporting relevant to the training program
• Contributing to the annual report, newsletters, website, Practitioner Blog, Class Action Forum attorney listserve, and other communications
• Cultivating relationships with nonprofit and private public interest legal organizations and law firms

Required Qualificaitons:

• J.D. from an accredited law school
• Member in good standing of the California State Bar or other State Bar
• Minimum 10 years of relevant work and educational experience, including at least 5 years of active class action litigation experience and 5 years of experience managing and staffing diverse teams
• Demonstrated commitment to our primary purpose: supporting impact litigation on behalf of communities seeking economic, environmental, racial, and social justice
• Cultural competency, including awareness of personal attitudes, beliefs, biases, and ability to effectively and respectfully receive and communicate feedback
• Demonstrated expertise in public speaking, presentations, and legal training
• Demonstrated expertise in class action procedure and strategy
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships within the nonprofit, private, and academic public interest legal community
• Collaborative team player with a demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion and the ability to work with a diverse community of professional colleagues
• Skilled use of Microsoft Office suite, specifically PowerPoint, and Zoom for presentations
• Located within commuting distance of the Impact Fund office in Berkeley, California

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

• Physical office located in Downtown Berkeley, near BART
• Hybrid work schedule (two in-office days each week)
• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
• Occasional travel for training events

  • Annual employer retirement contributions, vested after 3 years of employment.
• Reduced schedule option --The position is available as a full-time (100%) or reduced schedule (80%) position, depending on the candidate’s needs.
• Full-time salary starting at $115,000, based on experience
