The Medical Laboratory Assistant provides essential phlebotomy and laboratory services to support high-quality, patient-centered care in KANA's clinic and village communities. This position is responsible for collecting and processing laboratory specimens, performing approved laboratory testing, maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies, and ensuring accurate and timely reporting of results. The Medical Laboratory Assistant works closely with providers, nurses, care teams, and patients to coordinate laboratory services, support patient follow-up, and ensure seamless care and referrals.

This role also provides administrative and technical support for laboratory operations, including the Laboratory Information System, patient workflows, lab result notifications, and quality assurance activities. The position requires flexibility, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to patient service, with regular travel by small aircraft to provide laboratory services and support to KANA's village communities as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

• Collects, processes, and documents laboratory specimens (blood, urine, etc.) in compliance with OSHA and CLIA standards, including billing information for specimen transport.
• Maintains a clean, organized, and compliant laboratory environment.
• Monitors and maintains laboratory equipment, supplies, and sterilization processes.
• Processes and distributes reference laboratory reports and ensures required results are reported according to regulations.
• Coordinates laboratory services with patient appointments, providers, nurses, and care teams.
• Tracks outstanding reference lab results and investigates unresolved or delayed tests.
• Provides administrative support for lab result notifications, patient workflows, scheduling, and correspondence.
• Performs approved laboratory testing under the direction of the Laboratory Director or Technical Consultant.
• Supports the laboratory information system, informatics, and data analytics, including training, certification entry, and lot management.
• Participates in staff meetings, quality assurance activities, and assigned committees.
• Provides training and backup support for phlebotomy and remote village medical provider coverage.
• Travels by small plane to KANA village communities to provide laboratory services as needed.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Three years of relevant experience
• Current Medical Laboratory certification, or qualification by an approved program or agency
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Work Schedule:

KANA's standard work schedule is 37.5 working hours per week, consisting of 7.5 paid working hours per day plus a one-hour unpaid lunch break (8.5 hours on site per day). All KANA positions are based in Kodiak and are not eligible for remote work. Applicants must reside in Kodiak or be willing to relocate.
