Engineering Student Assistant - Technician/Field Work

Overview The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire two (2) student assistants, in a learning capacity, to work under the close supervision of a Supervising Transportation Engineer in the Department of Transportation Headquarters Asset Management. Base Pay: $18.28 - $28.16 per hour. Responsibilities 45% – Assist staff with tasks related to evaluation of project, inventory, and performance data; identify data problem areas and make recommendations for improvement; research data anomalies to increase accuracy of records; research automation opportunities into asset management processes, where appropriate. 35% – Support implementation of asset management by assisting in one or more of a variety of technical and data‑related projects. 20% – Support various other transportation asset management tasks. Requirements Conditions of Employment – This is a part‑time, temporary, non‑benefited, student position. Employment is contingent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the employee. UEI may terminate the employment relationship at will at any time, with or without cause. Depending on the type of position, a pre‑employment background check may be conducted. Applicants must pass required pre‑employment checks to the satisfaction of UEI and the hiring agency or department. Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable) at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. Students must be enrolled in at least six‑semester units or nine‑quarter units for undergraduate students, or four‑semester units or six‑quarter units for graduate students. Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting. Prerequisites Engineering and/or Computer Science majors or fields of study. Minimum Qualifications Maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. Complete each term with minimum unit requirements for undergraduate and graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Some experience with databases and spreadsheet functions. Good writing and oral communication skills. Ability to work well with others. Ability to focus on detailed work and stay organized. Preferred Qualifications Preference given to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking, under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220. Experience with quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) is ideal. Experience with geographic information systems (GIS) applications helpful is a plus. Experience with business intelligence applications such as Microsoft Power BI or Tableau is preferred. Work Schedule and Compensation Flexible workdays and hours, Monday – Friday, between 8 AM – 5 PM. Students and graduate assistants generally work up to 24 hours per workweek during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks (winter, spring, and summer). Final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor. Compensation: $18.28 to $28.16 per hour. Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.
