Engineering Student Assistant- Technician/Field Work

Position Overview Caltrans is seeking two (2) student assistants to work under the close supervision of the Office Chief, a Supervising Transportation Engineer, and with guidance from Senior Transportation Engineers and Analysts. The assistant will support the Construction Safety and Insurance Program and enhance statewide safety initiatives. Compensation $18.28 – $28.16 per hour. Student Eligibility Must be a college student enrolled in the regular fall, spring, or winter term at an accredited institution on Caltrans’ affiliation list. Undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least six semester units (nine quarter units) per term; graduate students must be enrolled in at least four semester units (six quarter units). The declared major must match the major(s) listed in the posting. Students must be enrolled in at least one of the following: civil engineering. Duties and Responsibilities Assist staff in evaluating, monitoring, and implementing safety initiatives, including tracking progress with spreadsheets and tools. Maintain data management systems, research, collect, and review data for safety programs such as COZEEP, CCSAP, and MCIN. Help prepare manuals, guidance, directives, and reports including the Construction Manual, Code of Safe Practices, and CAPE Report. Support the creation of PowerPoint presentations and safety training materials. Collaborate with stakeholders to develop safety applications and dashboards using Tableau. Coordinate statewide meetings and industry partner meetings, including the Caltrans Safety Summit and SSTG monthly meetings. Perform additional duties as required. Minimum Qualifications Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. Maintain required unit enrollment per term for undergraduate and graduate classifications. Major in civil engineering. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Word). Attention to detail and reliability. Organizational skills and deductive reasoning. Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat Professional. Ability to operate office equipment (PCs, copiers, scanners, printers). Preferred Qualifications Applicable to applicants up to 26 years of age who have been foster children, homeless youth, formerly incarcerated youth, or victims of human trafficking. Familiarity with Tableau or similar platforms. Experience with database software and accurate data entry. Skill in creating clear charts and graphs. Willingness to learn new software, applications, and workflow processes. Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; stand and walk frequently; use office equipment and handle manual tasks. Correct hearing and vision to normal range required. Working Conditions Work will be performed in an office and field environment.
