Site: Martha's Vineyard Hospital, Inc. Job Summary The primary purpose of this role is to provide nursing services in Emergency Care in accordance with federal, state and local standards, guidelines, regulations and established policies and procedures directed by the CEO, Director of Physician Services, CNE and practice providers. Essential Functions Assess physical, psychological and social dimensions of the patient. Apply knowledge of illnesses, injuries and disease and use available resources in the assessment process. Provide written assessment of patient on admission. Document nursing interventions, patient responses, effectiveness and complications and summarize information on discharge. Summarize assessment data and create a nursing care plan which is written and communicated to other patient care providers. Plan of Care Implement clinical and technical aspects of care and nursing orders in accordance with established policies and procedures. Intervene with proper technique, procedure and safety precautions to meet individual patient needs. Operate within the limits of the State Nurse Practice Act, hospital and nursing department policies and procedures. Provide patient and family instruction, education and discharge planning. Assess, plan and implement instruction for patient and family needs and communicate such plan via Bedside Shift Report. Provide verbal and written instructions including medication and side effects. Professional Leadership Report patient care or management problems to the Clinical Coordinator and/or supervisor when necessary and investigate and intervene in problem situations, reporting appropriate information. Make outpatient assignments based on acuity and staff qualifications and experience. Coordinate unit routines, provide guidance to staff, orient new staff and assure presence and working order of emergency equipment. Unit Requirements – Acute Care (MED/SURG) Demonstrate ability to care for patients in a variety of age groups, from pediatrics to geriatrics. Demonstrate ability to care for surgical patients. Demonstrate ability to care for medical patients. Demonstrate ability to provide a safe environment for short‑term psychiatric patients. Have working knowledge and safe use of medications specific to the acute‑care patient population. Personal Growth and Development Identify own learning needs and seek opportunities for self‑growth, using and sharing skills gained through continuing education classes. Complete annual nursing competencies. Attend annual mandatory training day. Age‑Specific Competency Evaluate age‑appropriate behavior, motor skills and physiological norms; recognize a patient’s psychological development and modify approaches accordingly. Use interview and communication techniques that are age‑appropriate. Required for All Jobs Perform other duties as assigned. Comply with all policies and standards. Qualifications Education Associate’s Degree in Nursing required; Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred. Licenses and Credentials Registered Nurse (RN) – State license required. Experience Emergency Department – 3 years of prior related ED experience; 1 year of ED: TNCC & NRP preferred; 1 year of ED: CPI/AVADE/MOAB training preferred. Med/Surg, Infusion, LDRP – 1 year of related medical/surgical experience; 1 year of LDRP preferred. NCMG – Minimum of 3 years of relevant clinical experience preferred. Perioperative – At least 2 years of prior perioperative experience. Dialysis – More than 1 year in a medical/surgical unit required; critical care experience preferred. Infusion – Strong IV skills or certification; current chemotherapy/biotherapy card required within 3 months of employment. LDRP – Current nursing standards of practice required; ACLS preferred; NRP certification required upon hire; breast‑feeding related certification required within one year of hire. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities – ED Coordinate and supervise staff assignment, make assignments and check for completion of job duties. Tactfully communicate with internal and external customers. Use telephone, fax, copier and other equipment associated with nursing practice. Stand/walk 90% of shift, frequently push, climb, bend, reach, stoop, squat and help lift objects and patients ranging from 5 to 300 pounds. Use hands, fingers, arms and wrists, hearing, smell, and verbal skills. Have color vision for perceiving changes in skin color and using color‑coded tubing. Utilize face shields/mask, gloves, protective clothing, safety glasses and other protection associated with patient care. BLS/CPR certification required within one week of hire (AHA & ARC accepted). ACLS and PALS certification required prior to completion of orientation or within 6 months of hire, whichever occurs first. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities – Med/Surg Tactfully communicate with internal and external customers. Use telephone, fax, copier, radio and other equipment associated with nursing practice. Stand and walk 90% of shift, push, climb, bend, reach, stoop, squat and lift objects and patients ranging from 5 to 300 pounds. Use hands, fingers, arms and wrists, hearing, smell, and verbal skills. Utilize face shields/mask, gloves, protective clothing, safety glasses and other protection associated with patient care. BLS/CPR certification required within one week of hire (AHA & ARC accepted). ACLS & PALS certification required prior to completion of orientation or within 6 months of hire. Professional certification in applicable nursing field(s) preferred. Completed training in IS-100 and any other mandated emergency management requirements. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities – NCMG Basic nursing principles knowledge. Good computer skills: Microsoft Office, electronic medical record systems, and medical office practice applications. Effective analytical, interpersonal, communication, leadership, and management skills. Use of telephone, calculator, fax, copier, scanner, and other related office equipment. Ability to bend frequently, use back and knees, stand and walk 40% sit 60% of time, climb, bend, reach, stoop, squat, and lift objects from 5 to 50 pounds, moving patients via wheelchair or stretcher; lift independently from 5 to 25 pounds. Professional presentation and rapport building with providers, clinical staff, patients, and families. Work independently and cooperatively with managers, employees, vendors, contractors, and other agencies. Flexible, highly organized and decision‑making abilities within medical office environments. Knowledge of basic principles of practice/departmental management. BLS/CPR certification required within one week of hire (AHA & ARC accepted). Additional certifications as required to perform clinical tasks in the clinical setting. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities – Perioperative Current nursing standards of practice knowledge. Demonstrate adequate technical skills and judgment to function unsupervised during on‑call, other shifts, and weekend hours. Tactfully communicate with internal and external customers. Handle stress and work in emergency situations. Assist patients on and off equipment; move quickly in emergencies. Stand and walk ~90% of shift, including frequent climbing, bending, reaching, stooping, squatting, lifting 5 to 300 or more pounds. Use hands and fingers to operate department equipment; use phone, calculator, fax, computer, and other related office equipment. BLS/CPR certification required within one week of hire (AHA & ARC accepted). ACLS and PALS certifications required prior to completion of orientation or within 6 months of hire. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities – Dialysis Demonstrate adequate technical skills and judgment to function unsupervised during on‑call, second shift, and weekend hours. Tactfully communicate with internal and external customers. Handle stress and work in emergency situations; use hands, fingers, arms and wrists, hearing, smell, and verbal skills. Stand and walk ~90% of shift; frequent climbing, bending, reaching, stooping, squatting, and lifting 5 to 300 or more pounds. Perform repetitive motions, bending, twisting, crouching, squat, pull, push, reach, and remain stationary for short periods. Differentiate colors. BLS/CPR certification required within one week of hire (AHA & ARC accepted). Knowledge, Skills and Abilities – Infusion Current nursing standards of practice knowledge. Previous demonstration of leadership skills and experience. Tactfully communicate with internal and external customers. Use telephone, fax, copier, and other equipment associated with nursing practice. Stand/walk 90% of shift, push, climb, bend, reach, stoop, squat and lift objects and patients 5 to 300 pounds. Use hands, fingers, arms and wrists, hearing, smell, and verbal skills. Utilize face shields/mask, gloves, protective clothing, safety glasses and other protection associated with patient care. Utilize face shields/mask, gloves, protective clothing, safety glasses and other protection associated with patient care. BLS/CPR certification required within one week of hire (AHA & ARC accepted). ACLS preferred. NRP certification required upon hire. Breast‑feeding related certification required within one year of hire. Additional Job Details Position is full time, 36 hours/week.
