Veterinary Extern - Specialty

Eligibility Applicants must be third or fourth-year students of accredited domestic or international veterinary schools, pursuing a DVM, VMD, or foreign equivalent. First and second-year students may be considered on a case-by-case basis. About CBEAM The Center for Bird and Exotic Animal Medicine (CBEAM) is a very busy, exotics-exclusive emergency and routine care practice that is open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Externship students work 5 days a week, shadowing and participating in rooms, as well as assisting with routine and emergency cases, including performing treatments and helping in surgery. Responsibilities Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. They will also practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients. Requirements Applicants must submit a letter of intent, a CV, and 2–3 letters of recommendation from advisors who can attest to their interest and experience in exotic animal medicine. Internship Details Recommended duration is 4 weeks (shorter spans possible). Typical schedule: Sundays through Thursdays, from 7:30am to around 6pm (day cases). Students should be present at 7:30am for treatments, then attend hospital rounds at 8am. Students are expected to be available for overnight emergency procedures on at least two days; scheduling can be flexible for extended overnight coverage. Didactic rounds are held on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:30–9:30am. Dress code: matching scrubs or dressy casual with a lab coat (avoid white to be more fear‑free). Students must arrange a radiation badge for radiograph imaging; if unavailable, they cannot be in the radiology room. There is no compensation for the externship. Housing: staff members may host students for a minimal cost upon request.
