Job Description
This role focuses on repairing, maintaining, and assembling a wide range of industrial rotating equipment, primarily large industrial pumps. You will receive assigned jobs by week and by day, and will be responsible for the full lifecycle of each pump, from receiving and teardown through inspection, diagnosis, repair, reassembly, and final quality checks to ensure safe and reliable operation.
Responsibilities

• Receive industrial pumps and related rotating equipment and prepare them for inspection and repair.
• Disassemble and tear down pumps of various sizes, ranging from handheld units to equipment up to 8 feet tall and 40 feet long, often weighing around 1,000 pounds.
• Inspect components using precision measurement tools such as micrometers and vernier calipers to verify dimensions and tolerances.
• Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues and determine necessary repairs for pumps used in mills, food and beverage operations, and other industrial environments.
• Perform repairs, including mechanical repair, engine repair, and component replacement, ensuring equipment meets specifications and operates safely.
• Reassemble pumps and other rotating equipment, ensuring proper mechanical assembly, fit, and alignment.
• Install and align repaired equipment in accordance with technical specifications and best practices.
• Use hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, drills, and air guns, as well as power tools and air-powered tools, in daily work.
• Perform precision measurement and inspection tasks to confirm quality and functionality after repair and assembly.
• Carry out preventive maintenance activities on industrial rotating equipment to minimize downtime and extend service life.
• Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to guide disassembly, repair, and reassembly processes.
• Document inspection results, repair actions, and equipment status clearly and accurately in written reports.
• Apply troubleshooting skills to identify root causes of equipment failures and recommend effective corrective actions.
• Utilize basic electrical and wiring skills as needed to support equipment diagnostics and repairs.
• Work safely in a workshop and machine shop environment, following all safety procedures and using appropriate protective equipment.
• Collaborate with team members, contributing to a positive and cooperative work environment.
• Occasionally perform machining tasks using manual lathes, mills, and threading equipment when needed for repairs (if experienced).
• Perform welding tasks as required for certain repair operations (if experienced).
• Maintain and use personal tool set effectively, ensuring tools are in good working condition.
• Support continuous improvement efforts in repair processes, quality standards, and safety practices.

Essential Skills

• At least 5 years of experience as a Technician, preferably with pump repair; experience as a Maintenance Mechanic is also suitable.
• Strong hands-on experience with industrial rotating equipment, mainly pumps, including disassembly, repair, and reassembly.
• Proficiency using hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, drills, air guns, micrometers, and vernier calipers.
• Ability to perform pump repair, inspection, troubleshooting, and mechanical repair tasks independently.
• Experience with mechanical assembly, hydraulics, electrical basics, and preventive maintenance in an industrial or maintenance setting.
• Capability to read, write, speak, and interpret English to understand instructions and accurately record inspection and repair reports.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret blueprints and technical documentation related to mechanical equipment.
• Strong attention to detail and precision measurement skills for inspection and quality verification.
• Positive attitude and ability to work effectively as part of a team in a workshop environment.
• Ownership of personal tools required to perform daily mechanical and repair tasks.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Pump repair experience in industrial environments such as mills, food and beverage, or similar facilities.
• Experience with manual machining, including operation of manual lathes, mills, and threading equipment.
• Welding experience for repair and fabrication tasks.
• Experience in automotive maintenance, diesel maintenance, or engine repair, providing transferable mechanical skills.
• Familiarity with industrial rotating equipment beyond pumps is beneficial.
• Experience with precision measurement and inspection techniques in a mechanical setting.
• High School Diploma or Technical School education preferred but not required.
• Ability to work safely with power tools, air-powered tools, and in a machine shop environment.
• Strong troubleshooting mindset and ability to diagnose complex mechanical and electrical issues.
• Comfort working with wiring and basic electrical components as part of equipment repair.

Work Environment
The role is based in a medium-sized industrial facility with approximately 15 employees, creating a close-knit and collaborative atmosphere. The site includes a receiving area for incoming equipment, a dedicated workshop where mechanics perform disassembly, repair, and assembly work, and a full machine shop equipped for manual machining operations. You will work daily with industrial pumps of varying sizes, using hand tools, power tools, air-powered tools, precision measurement instruments, and machining equipment. The environment emphasizes safety, with appropriate safety equipment provided, and supports hands-on, shop-floor work typical of an industrial maintenance and repair facility.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of BLUE ISLAND, IL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
