1.0 Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's or master's degree in microbiology, biomedical sciences, laboratory sciences, or a related discipline. Experience in a clinical, veterinary, diagnostic, or research microbiology laboratory. Experience with bacterial culture, isolation and identification; QA/QC procedures; laboratory information systems; SOPs; and BSL-2 laboratory practices. Experience supporting animal research, sample collection, or necropsy is preferred. Experience with avian pathogens or Salmonella culture and characterization is desirable. Position Summary This position supports diagnostic bacteriology and research activities at the Poultry Diagnostic & Research Center (PDRC), with primary responsibility for culture, isolation, identification, and characterization of bacterial pathogens from avian diagnostic submissions. The individual will perform routine to moderately complex bacteriological procedures, evaluate bacterial growth, perform established identification methods, interpret results according to laboratory procedures, and troubleshoot routine technical issues, referring unusual or complex findings to the section head as appropriate. The position will also support research projects, including animal studies, sample collection and processing, and procedures conducted under approved research protocols. Additional responsibilities include quality control, maintenance of SOPs, data management and reporting, laboratory inventory and equipment maintenance, and support for implementation of diagnostic methods. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies Working knowledge of microbiological and bacteriological principles, including bacterial isolation, identification, and interpretation of culture results. Ability to perform routine to moderately complex laboratory procedures, troubleshoot routine technical problems, maintain accurate records, and follow quality and biosafety requirements. Strong attention to detail, organization, and communication skills. Proficiency with laboratory information systems and common data-management software. Physical Demands Ability to lift at least 50 lbs., stand or sit for long periods of time, and engage in long periods of repetitive actions. Is driving a responsibility of this position?
