About the Position

Canyon Contracting, Inc. is looking for an experienced Metal Fabrication Estimator / Project Manager to join our Custom Metals Division in Mount Airy, MD.

This position combines estimating and project management and is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive estimates for miscellaneous metals and structural steel projects, including steel stairs, railings, ladders, and other structural steel components.

The Estimator / Project Manager will manage awarded projects from  bid through completion , serving as a primary point of contact for customers, vendors, subcontractors, and Canyon's fabrication and field teams.

 

What you'll Do

Estimating

• Review construction bid documents, architectural and structural drawings, blueprints, specifications, and other project documents.
• Prepare detailed cost estimates and material take-offs.
• Calculate labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, and other project costs.
• Solicit and evaluate quotes from suppliers, subcontractors, and manufacturers.
• Prepare bid packages, required bid forms, and supporting documentation.
• Communicate with general contractors and construction managers regarding project scope and schedules.
• Maintain the project bid schedule and complete estimates within established deadlines.
• Conduct site visits and pre-bid walkthroughs as needed.
• Participate in pre-bid and post-bid scope reviews, proposal reviews, and negotiations.
• Follow up on submitted bids and maintain communication with customers.
• Transition awarded projects into project management and accounting, including budgets, project requirements, subcontractors, vendors, and kickoff meetings.

Project Management

• Manage awarded projects from handoff through completion.
• Serve as a primary contact for customers, consultants, subcontractors, and internal project stakeholders.
• Prepare and track submittals, RFIs, change orders, and project documentation.
• Coordinate fabrication drawings with estimators, detailers, shop personnel, and field operations.
• Develop and monitor project schedules, budgets, and milestones.
• Coordinate fabrication and installation subcontractors, including contracts, progress, invoicing, and documentation.
• Conduct jobsite visits to monitor progress, resolve issues, and support successful project delivery.
• Coordinate project turnover with fabrication, shop, and field personnel.
• Price change orders and revisions.
• Work with Superintendents and Foremen to resolve scope issues.
• Work with Accounting on monthly billings, change order tracking, and project closeout.
• Help ensure punch lists are completed and project processes are followed.
• Support compliance with project safety plans.
• Build and maintain strong customer relationships while identifying opportunities for future work.

What We're Looking For

• Minimum 5 years of experience in metal fabrication estimating, project management, or a combination of both.
• Experience with miscellaneous metals and structural steel projects preferred .
• Strong ability to read and interpret:
  • Architectural drawings
  • Structural drawings
  • Blueprints
  • Welding symbols
  • Construction specifications
• Thorough understanding of steel fabrication and erection methods .
• Proficiency with estimating software and Microsoft Office.
• Ability to manage multiple bids and projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
• Strong organizational, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.

Education

An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Drafting, Construction Science, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent industry experience may be substituted.

Physical Requirements

This position involves a combination of office and field activities. The employee may be required to sit, stand, walk, climb ladders and stairs, access rooftops, and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
