Position Summary Under the general direction of the Technical Supervisor, provides ancillary support for clinical activities by performance and appropriate interpretation of moderate and high complexity clinical laboratory tests as defined under CLIA '88. May also perform phlebotomy or therapeutic procedures. Position: Medical Technologist II. Department: Codman Square CHC Lab Services. Schedule: Part Time (Per diem). Essential Duties & Responsibilities After specialized training and required experience, perform moderate and high complexity tests and interpret them. Act as a resource and interpret tests for laboratory users consistently with training and knowledge level. Review testing and procedures performed by other staff to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies. Prioritize STAT and routine samples and ensure accurate specimen identification, labeling, and appropriateness per SOP. Obtain approval for testing that deviates from SOP and follow up with notifications to patient care unit and documentation in LIS. Ensure sample testing is performed within defined time periods for each test type based on specimen viability. Initiate corrective action and document steps taken to resolve mislabeled or inappropriate specimens. Identify labeling problems or discrepancies, inform other laboratory sections, and ensure patient identification or MRN problems are addressed. Ensure prepared samples are stored per SOP (e.g., refrigerated, frozen, incubated) and that aliquoting/processing occurs within established time limits. Accession specimens according to SOP and perform instrument and equipment maintenance as defined by policy. Recognize instrument, equipment or methodology problems and report them with documentation to Assistant Supervisor or Supervisor. Perform QC procedures, assess quality control data, and recognize technical and non-technical problems in laboratory operations. Perform analytic testing and assess result validity per section policy. Maintain clear, concise, accurate and legible test performance records; provide proper documentation of all procedures. Review patient results, recognize problems, investigate, and perform additional testing when possible; notify Supervisor of unresolved issues. Transcribe results/information accurately into LIS, append coded comments, and use LIS to promote clarity of laboratory results. Notify appropriate persons of all critical alert values and required callbacks; provide adequate documentation. Maintain proficiency for all designated LIS functions, receipt and implementation of reagents/lots/materials, and blood inventories (Blood Bank only). Assist other laboratory sections as needed and participate in quality advancement/improvement activities. Perform specimen collection procedures per Phlebotomy Procedures, maintain initial and annual competency documents, and age-specific competency. Attend departmental continuing education, scientific or service-related classes, staff meetings, and teaching activities. Participate in committees or task forces, communicate inventory or instrument status, answer telephone according to policy, and assist other staff. Report incidents, safety hazards, or accidents; attend mandatory safety education sessions. Respect patient and employee confidentiality, maintain orderly work area, and perform assignments with minimal direction. Communicate with Supervisors and Medical Directors, plan and prioritize tasks, adjust to variable workloads, and assess inventory weekly. Adhere to Hospital Infection Control and Safety procedures; perform other duties as assigned. Job Requirements Education Requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science, including successful completion of a supervised clinical internship in an approved hospital laboratory. Alternative: Bachelor's degree in an applied science (Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry) with two years of clinical laboratory experience. Experience If Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science: requires one year of clinical laboratory experience. Knowledge & Skills Knowledge of clinical tests and standards necessary to perform highly complex tests as defined by CLIA; ability to perform venipuncture techniques; analytic abilities to perform calculations, calibrate instruments, and review highly complex testing by others. Must maintain compliance with regulatory agencies such as JC, CAP, FDA, AABB. Requires manual and visual dexterity, computer software proficiency, and interpersonal communication skills sufficient for dialogue with physicians and colleagues. Compensation Range: $30.05- $43.75 per hour (estimation based on minimum job qualifications).
