Skilled Trades Worker 2 HVAC

POSITION OBJECTIVE The skilled trades worker will work in a self-directed work team environment to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair various HVAC and mechanical system throughout various types of buildings ranging from academic, to residence, to research environments. Must be able to work alone and in teams when needed to resolve heating and cooling issues with and without the use of blueprints, manuals, and ensure proper codes, means and methods are followed. Will be predominantly engaged in the retro-commissioning and repair of mechanical equipment, controls, and systems associated with HVAC, refrigeration, and energy management systems. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Recognize the need for and perform maintenance and repairs on all types of mechanical equipment, including compressors, refrigeration systems, fans, motors, emergency generators, etc. (30%) Independently diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctioning mechanical systems, controls, and equipment, which may be in confined space or restricted access laboratories. Labs are cleared before entry but will still require proper PPE to be worn as a precautionary measure. (30%) Repair, re-commission and/or replace equipment associated with steam generating and distribution (boilers, pumps, and lines), systems controls (electronic and pneumatic), emergency generators and transfer equipment, air conditioning (cooling towers, chillers, and fans), computerized energy management and other systems as directed. (20%) Inspect and log the operation of campus mechanical systems; accurately maintain associated records. Manage and direct workload independently and be diligent in documenting actions and recording proper information into the workorder system (e.g., locations, hours worked, billable account numbers, contact names and numbers, etc.) for use by the management team. Be available to work in other Zones when needed for any task not necessarily trade oriented (10%) Transport and install equipment necessary for HVAC work throughout the university area other non-related duties. (7%) NONESSENTIAL FUNCITONS Perform other duties as assigned. (3%) CONTACTS Department: Frequent contact with department staff University: Regular contact with all members of university External: Regular contact with vendors and contractors Students: Occasional contact with students in work zone as it pertains to skilled trades¿ maintenance SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. QUALIFICAITONS Experience: 7 years of experience working on mechanical systems, including steam, refrigeration, and systems controls in an institutional, heavy industrial or light commercial environment. Experience in more than one discipline is desirable, but not required. Education/Licensing: High school education required. Accredited vocational training in a mechanical field or completed apprenticeship working with mechanical equipment, systems, maintenance repairs and or replacement. Must have formal training in two of the four disciplines (HVAC, steam, refrigeration, controls). Third class Stationary Engineer¿s license is desirable, but not required. A valid driver\'s license free of significant violations is required. WORKING CONDITIONS The employee will work in confined spaces and restricted access laboratories that although cleared before entry will still require proper PPE to be worn as a precautionary measure (in all cases no one will ever be expected to enter an area before deemed safe by our Environmental Safety Department). The employee is directly exposed to the following hazards in the work environment: animals, moving machinery, blood borne pathogens, chemicals, commercial cleaning solvents and oils, confined space entry and / or restricted access, excessive noise, fumes, dust, pesticides or herbicides, radioactive materials, and repetitive motion. Personal protective equipment (gloves, hard hat, hearing protection, protective eyewear, safety shoes, and respiratory protection) is provided. Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs. Must be physically capable of reaching any area of facilities with tools and materials, including roofs, tunnels, and catwalks; this may involve frequent balance, frequent bending, stooping, stretching, crawling, and climbing. Must be able to pass required physical examination. Apply inline at jobs.case.edu search job #14335 REQUIRED SKILLS Must be proficient with multiple building automation systems (i.e. Trane Tracer Summit, Invensys, Seamans, and JCI Metasys). Familiarity with the proper use of basic hand tools, power tools, and safety equipment. Must be able to work well both independently and as a member of a team. Must be familiar with hazards typical to the institution (radioactivity, asbestos, chemicals, etc.) and related safety equipment and procedures. Training will be provided. Must be able to read technical diagrams but must also be sufficiently familiar with systems and equipment to diagnose problems without prints. Technical proficiency in diagnosing and maintaining mechanical systems, equipment and controls is essential. Must be able to identify and repair problems without supervision. Basic computer skills: must be willing to learn Work Management System software to record work performed in the Zone. Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest.
