Job Description and Duties

STAFF PARK & RECREATION SPECIALIST – STRATEGIC PLANNING & RECREATION SERVICES DIVISION / GENERAL & RECREATION PLANNING / SACRAMENTO

The reporting location is 715 P Street, Sacramento, 95814. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Senior Park and Recreation Specialist.

The position oversees personnel and the Division’s efforts in the development and implementation of general and recreation plans, programs, and projects. This position will lead and supervise a small group of Associate and Park and Recreation Specialists and other staff working as a unit, and personally perform the most difficult and highly sensitive work assigned to the unit.

The position will oversee staff and participate in the following duties:

The team is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of a wide range of statewide visitor use and recreation studies, statistical reports, feasibility studies, assessments, master plans, and similar planning documents to meet the long-range strategic needs of the State Park System and the Statewide Park and recreation delivery system.

The team manages a wide range of State Park planning documents such as Classification reports, Cornerstone documents, general plans, management plans and project-specific plans that guide many aspects of State Park System units’ management.

The Division often leads public campaigns and statewide initiatives, which requires coordination with other Department staff, agencies, and partners. The position will help coordinate and manage related public engagement outreach tools (online platforms, websites, email), meetings, workshops, site visits, and data integration; and produce internal, legislative, and public reports.

The position may oversee the development and coordination of technical assistance materials for local government park and recreation agencies, including surveys, written materials, and participation in workshops, forums, conferences, and training sessions. They may develop and update Department policy and guidance documents, implement priority planning actions, and develop decision support tools for Department executive staff.

Duties may also include data collection and management, contracts, budgets, project scoping, project management, public speaking, and occasional travel.

Training and Development Assignments may be considered.

This position requires a class C equivalent driver's license.

This position is designated as telework eligible-office centered.

This includes expertise in planning for public land recreation, natural and cultural resource conservation, interpretation, education, and the development and management of roads, trails, and other public facilities. Additionally, the candidate should:
