Job Title: MIG Welder / Fabricator

Job Description

This role focuses on fabricating and welding a wide range of sheet metal and structural steel products, including guards, chutes, covers, conveyors, tanks, frames, and flumes. You will work with materials ranging from 14-gauge to 1/4-inch carbon steel plate and stainless steel, using MIG welding techniques, hand and power tools, and material handling equipment to produce high-quality finished parts.

Responsibilities

• Fabricate and weld small to large sheet metal and structural steel products such as guards, chutes, covers, conveyors, tanks, frames, and flumes.

• Perform MIG welding on materials ranging from 14-gauge through 1/4-inch carbon steel plate and stainless steel.

• Operate MIG welding machines and correctly regulate current, voltage, gas flow, and other parameters to ensure proper fusion and weld quality.

• Select appropriate materials and gauge of metal based on job requirements, drawings, and specifications.

• Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, layouts, sketches, samples, prototypes, and verbal instructions to determine fabrication and welding requirements.

• Fit, position, and align components prior to welding to ensure accurate assembly and proper dimensions.

• Use various hand and power tools, including grinders and sanders, to finish products and achieve required surface quality.

• Grind out slag, burrs, and sharp edges using portable grinders or sanders to produce safe and clean finished parts.

• Inspect completed parts for quality, accuracy, and conformance to specifications, and clearly mark part numbers on finished components.

• Operate forklifts and overhead cranes to safely move parts, assemblies, and raw materials within the facility.

• Maintain a clean and organized work area, following safety procedures and best practices at all times.

• Collaborate with team members and supervisors to meet production schedules and address any issues related to quality or fabrication.

Essential Skills

• Proficiency in MIG welding on 14-gauge through 1/4-inch carbon steel plate and stainless steel.

• Ability to operate MIG welding machines and adjust current, voltage, gas flow, and related settings for proper weld fusion.

• Strong blueprint and engineering drawing reading skills, including layouts, sketches, and prototypes.

• Experience with fitting and assembling sheet metal and structural steel components prior to welding.

• Skilled in using tape measures and other measuring tools to ensure accurate dimensions and tolerances.

• Ability to use hand and power tools, including grinders and sanders, to finish welded products.

• Experience grinding out slag, burrs, and sharp edges to produce safe and smooth finished parts.

• Capability to inspect finished parts for quality and accurately mark part numbers on completed components.

• Ability to operate forklifts and overhead cranes safely to move materials and parts.

• Comfort working with both carbon steel and stainless steel materials.

Work Environment

This is a first-shift role, typically working from 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a 30-minute lunch. The standard schedule is based on 8-hour shifts, with 10-hour shifts as needed. There may be occasional Saturday work, up to a maximum of 8 hours, and some days may require a 6:00 a.m. start time, so flexibility in scheduling is important. The facility is a well-lit building with significant character, originally constructed in 1906, featuring several windows and a traditional industrial layout. Temperatures may vary with the seasons, and the environment can range from hot to cold depending on the time of year. In the summer months, fans and open doors help improve airflow, and cold drinks and frozen treats are provided to support comfort. The role involves working around welding equipment, hand and power tools, forklifts, and overhead cranes in an active fabrication shop.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Machesney Park, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00/hr.
