Purpose of the Role
The Plant Manager is responsible for the day-to-day execution of plant operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant production of high-quality compost products. Reporting to the Director of Plant Operations, this role translates operational direction into daily actions on the plant floor by leading frontline teams, coordinating production and maintenance activities, and serving as the site-level leader for safety, quality, and workforce development.
How You Make an Impact
As Plant Manager, you are the operational heartbeat of the facility. By managing daily production activities, overseeing equipment readiness, and coaching frontline leaders and operators, you ensure production goals are met while maintaining safety, regulatory compliance, and product quality. Your hands-on leadership directly enables operational consistency, team capability, and continuous improvement at the site.
Key Responsibilities
  • Execute daily plant operations, including scheduling production activities and managing incoming material volumes in alignment with direction from the Director of Plant Operations.
  • Serve as the on-site leader for safety by enforcing company EHS policies, responding to incidents, and ensuring required training and certifications for equipment operators.
  • Drive production targets by monitoring shift performance, adjusting staffing or workflows as needed, and escalating issues or constraints to the Director of Plant Operations.
  • Oversee daily equipment condition and readiness, ensuring inspections, greasing, and preventative maintenance activities are completed to standard.
  • Coordinate with maintenance personnel and external contractors to support predictive and preventative maintenance programs.
  • Maintain compliance with all regulatory requirements and permits, supporting audits, inspections, and documentation as directed.
  • Supervise, train, and develop production employees, including onboarding new team members and delivering hands-on instruction in safety, equipment operation, and composting fundamentals.
  • Partner with the Director of Plant Operations to coach and develop Shift Leads, using performance outcomes and engagement as key success indicators.
  • Manage shift schedules and personnel assignments to ensure adequate coverage for production needs, vacations, and extended absences.
  • Act as the facility point of contact for product quality, inventory status, and material or amendment needs.
  • Promote organization, visual management, and efficient workflow across the facility, identifying improvement opportunities and sharing recommendations with the Director of Plant Operations.
  • Support cost control efforts at the site level and operate with awareness of expense management and operational efficiency.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five to eight years of progressive experience in plant, production, or operations leadership, preferably in composting, manufacturing, agriculture, or waste-related industries.
  • Strong working knowledge of equipment operations, safety protocols, and production workflows.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, and WasteWorks or similar operational systems.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain Certified Compost Operations Manager (CCOM) certification.
Success Profile
To be successful in this role, the Plant Manager will demonstrate:
  • Operational Execution: Consistent achievement of daily and weekly production targets while maintaining product quality standards.
  • Safety Leadership: Visible commitment to safety, proactive incident reporting, and strong adherence to environmental and regulatory requirements.
  • People Development: Effective onboarding, training, and coaching of operators and Shift Leads to build a capable and engaged workforce.
  • Equipment Reliability: Established routines for inspections, preventative maintenance, and timely repair coordination that support uptime and efficiency.
  • Continuous Improvement: Initiative in identifying workflow, organization, and process improvements that enhance safety, quality, and productivity.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach, and use hands and arms to handle or operate tools, equipment, and materials. The employee frequently climbs stairs, bends, stoops, and moves about the facility, including outdoor and uneven terrain. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
