SALT Partner

Nationally recognized AmLaw firm is seeking to add a Partner to its State & Local Tax (SALT) practice as part of a strategic expansion into California, one of the most complex and opportunity-rich state tax markets. This role is well-suited for an entrepreneurial practitioner with strong California experience and a growth-oriented mindset.

This role will play a key leadership function in building out the firm’s California presence and expanding its SALT platform nationally. The attorney will help position the firm as a trusted advisor on high-stakes tax residency, multistate planning, and audit/controversy matters.

Responsibilities

• Lead and expand the firm’s California SALT practice, including market strategy, business development, and team leadership
• Advise clients on complex California residency and domicile matters, including day-count analysis, sourcing, and audit-ready documentation
• Provide strategic guidance on relocations, liquidity events, remote workforce issues, and California exit planning
• Counsel multistate businesses on nexus, apportionment, combined reporting, withholding, and compliance
• Represent clients in state tax audits, administrative appeals, and litigation before relevant tax authorities and courts
• Build and maintain relationships with referral sources, financial advisors, family offices, and institutional clients
• Collaborate with Corporate, Tax, Private Client, and Real Estate teams to deliver integrated client solutions
• Mentor and develop junior attorneys while helping scale the SALT practice

Qualifications

• Significant experience in state and local tax planning, compliance, and controversy (California-focused)
• Strong knowledge of California tax law and multistate tax principles
• Proven ability to manage multiple matters in a fast-paced environment
• Demonstrated leadership in client service, team development, and practice growth
• Portable book of business with an existing SALT client portfolio
