Store Manager

As the Store Manager for our Wild Birds Unlimited store in Macon, you are a key member of our management team. The Store Manager is a critical leader in coaching, developing, and motivating sales associates to directly impact our organizational and overall goals. The position of Store Manager reports to the owner.

The primary responsibility of the Store Manager is to profitably manage the day-to-day operations of the store by following the best practices, as well as directing and coaching the store associates to provide a high-energy customer experience.

Store Operations

• Proactively engages management and leads team to attain results.
• Demonstrates a positive, enthusiastic, and professional demeanor and communicates well with the owner, team members, and customers.
• Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the store and MyWBU, including staffing, managing inventory, ordering products, and proactively identifying opportunities to improve the operations of the store and MyWBU processes. Leadership ability is key.
• Continually works towards achieving sales goals while controlling expenses.
• Regularly communications and meets with management to review current activities and results, communicate opportunities to improve effectiveness, efficiencies, and cost savings, and to establish or revise future operating plans.
• Plans and directs the MyWBU experience for our customers by ensuring a current product database and accurate and safe shipping and handling.
• Completes special projects as required to better service our customers.
• Assists management in maintaining adequate inventory levels and communicates information regarding inventory turn.
• Responsible for inventory management in the POS including checking-in, receiving, and committing merchandise and pricing updates and placing some orders as assigned.

 

Selling / Customer Experience

• Understands that the high-energy customer experience is the #1 priority.
• Uses successful selling skills to satisfy the customer and complete the sale.
• Directs and coaches the team on best practices and high-level customer experience.
• Sets the example and guidelines to provide an exceptional customer service shopping experience.

Team Management

• Manages the hiring, training, and coaching of store associates.
• Assists management in setting performance expectations and provides regular coaching at the individual and team level to identify opportunities and support continuous improvement.
• Conducts yearly reviews with all associates based on previous years’ goals and performance.
• Conducts staff meetings on a regular basis regarding product and hobby knowledge, store information, and sales and customer experience training.
• Responsible for scheduling staff efficiently within the assigned hours and utilizes When To Work(W2W) system to ensure coverage, track and approve time off, and meet staffing needs.
• Understands and communicates the store’s merchandise and target products.

 

Marketing

• Implements the Marketing Planner as directed by management.
• Plans or verifies that social media posts, radio ads, TV ads, and Slicktext support the marketing plan.
• Plans displays, signing, staffing for upcoming promotions and events.
• Assists management in public relations, community talks, in-store seminars, and store communication.

Administrative Control

• Adheres to all store policies and procedures regarding the ringing of all transactions, any administrative duties and scheduling.
• Responsible for ensuring that bank deposits are made twice weekly.
• Responsible for finalizing the store staffing schedule for the next month by the 20th and notifying the Director of Operations/store owner.
• Keeps store office and backroom clean and organized.
• Trains staff on security awareness and loss prevention measures and communicate concerns to management.

Store Maintenance

• Identifies opportunities to improve processes and reduce costs when necessary.
• Maintains good housekeeping standards to help establish clean and well-presented store.
• Ensures store personnel adhere to store cleanliness standards.  

Community Engagement

• Schedule in-store presentation – communicate with the presenter and registered participants about the events
• Schedule bird walks – communicate with the presenter and registered participants about the events
• Work with local organizations and businesses to provide donation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

• Must have at least 5 to 10 years of retail management experience. College degree or relevant technical or vocational training preferred.
• Interest in the backyard bird feeding hobby or nature.
• Must be skilled in leadership, coaching, and training, sales generation, strategic planning, customer service, communication, conflict resolution, business acumen, time management, and general retail software proficiency and/or understanding. Use of ERPLY retail software a plus, but not required.
• Must be able to provide feedback, develop others, embrace and lead change, and make clear and defined decisions.
• Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to act with integrity and professionalism to ensure that all business is conducted without bias or prejudice.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., perform frequent standing, walking, repetitive finger, hand and wrist motions, as well as bending, stooping, reaching, squatting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and climbing ladders.
• Must be available to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the business, which will include closing and weekend shifts and working during busy holiday periods. Must work at least two weekends a month.

Reliable transportation is needed to travel to the store, events, or storage location, and to move inventory between these places.
