Job Title: Construction Material Tester Job Description
The Construction Material Tester works primarily in the field, performing soil compaction and concrete strength testing on active construction projects in the Indianapolis area and surrounding regions. This role reports directly to job sites, interacts closely with general contractors and subcontractors, and ensures that construction materials meet project specifications and industry standards through accurate sampling, testing, and documentation.
Responsibilities- Perform field testing of construction materials, including soil compaction and concrete strength, on job sites in Indianapolis and surrounding areas.
- Report directly to assigned job sites and coordinate daily activities with general contractors and subcontractors.
- Randomly collect concrete samples from concrete trucks in accordance with project requirements and testing protocols.
- Prepare concrete samples by placing them into cylinders, conducting required onsite tests, and properly labeling them for subsequent laboratory testing.
- Operate a nuclear density machine to measure soil compaction percentages, following established procedures and safety guidelines.
- Interpret and follow project specifications, ensuring that soil compaction and concrete testing meet required percentage thresholds and construction guidelines.
- Accurately record and document test results, observations, and any deviations from specifications for use in project quality control.
- Maintain testing equipment, including nuclear density machines and sampling tools, in clean and working condition.
- Communicate clearly with site personnel regarding testing activities, access to test locations, and any issues affecting material quality or compliance.
- Work safely in active construction environments, remaining aware of surroundings, heavy equipment, and concrete truck traffic at all times.
- Support ongoing and future projects in multiple locations, including travel between the Indianapolis office area and project sites such as Kokomo, IN.
- 1–2+ years of construction or outdoor work experience, preferably in a field-based environment.
- Ability to lift and carry 50+ pounds regularly as part of daily field testing activities.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel between job sites.
- Basic understanding of construction practices, materials, and job site operations.
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on active construction sites.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow project specifications and testing procedures accurately.
- Strong awareness of safety practices and situational awareness in environments with moving vehicles and heavy equipment.
- ACI certification or INDOT certifications related to concrete or materials testing.
- Experience operating nuclear density equipment for soil compaction testing.
- Soils Level II certification or equivalent training in geotechnical or soils testing.
- Prior INDOT certifications supporting transportation or infrastructure projects.
- Laboratory testing experience with concrete, soils, or other construction materials.
- Familiarity with construction inspection and quality control processes.
- Experience working on high-profile or large-scale construction projects.

Work EnvironmentThe role is primarily field-based in an outdoor construction environment, working directly on active job sites with general contractors and subcontractors. The work involves regular exposure to construction activities, including concrete trucks entering and exiting the project area, heavy equipment, and varying weather conditions. Safety awareness and adherence to site protocols are essential. The position may require travel between locations such as Indianapolis and Kokomo, IN to support ongoing projects. Dress attire consists of boots, jeans without holes, and a shirt with sleeves, suitable for a professional appearance and safe field work.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $19.00 - $19.00/hr.
