RN - Correctional Health

Registered NurseThe Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care. This includes executing orders from Licensed Independent Providers. The RN dispenses and administers medications. The RN assists Licensed Independent Providers in examinations and treatment of patients. Nursing and supervisory techniques are applied in the care and treatment of inmates/residents. The RN performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure. Appropriate nursing skills are applied in the treatment of inmates/residents. The RN attends sick calls with physicians to see inmates/residents. They prepare a list of inmates/residents to be examined. The examining room and equipment are prepared by the RN. The RN operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required. Communication is maintained with Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders. In case of emergencies, the RN notifies Licensed Independent Providers. The RN examines and assesses new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries. Referrals are made to emergency rooms or other appropriate healthcare facilities as required. Emergency procedures are performed, and Licensed Independent Providers are notified for treatment orders. Coordination of professional medical services provided by contract personnel is also part of the RN's responsibilities. Monitoring inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases when appropriate is required. The RN provides guidance, supervision, and monitoring of nursing care provided by staff. A good working relationship is maintained with facility staff and contract providers. Established policies and procedures are utilized in decision-making. Regular evaluation of medical services is conducted to prevent inappropriate use or duplication. Confidentiality of all medical records must be maintained. The RN assists in reviewing medical files to ensure services are documented. Potential catastrophic illnesses are closely monitored. Pharmacy use is audited for adherence to formulary as required. Compliance with pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances, is mandatory. Observation and recording of inmate/resident behavior are part of the job responsibilities. The medical unit is inspected for items that could be used as contraband. Health counseling and health education are provided on an individual or group basis. The RN assists in preparing and maintaining operational records, reports, and logs. Reading and interpreting medical and technical procedures, regulations, and documents is required. Processing and responding to lawsuits, and attending court hearings if necessary, is part of the job. Facilitation of accreditation of the medical program by providing efficient medical services is mandated. Safety and accident reports must be prepared and disseminated as required.
