Job Description

The Group Leader Production supervises and coordinates the activities of production and operating workers in a metal casting and foundry environment. This role focuses on leading an hourly union workforce, optimizing production methods, and ensuring product quality and efficiency while maintaining a safe and structured work environment.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and coordinate daily activities of production and operating workers in a manufacturing and metal casting facility.
• Recommend and implement measures to motivate employees and improve production methods, equipment performance, product quality, and overall efficiency.
• Review production operations regularly and collaborate with technical and administrative staff to resolve production or processing problems.
• Develop and implement production tracking and quality control systems, analyzing production, quality, and maintenance data to detect and address production issues.
• Hire, train, evaluate, and, when necessary, discharge staff while addressing and resolving personnel grievances in a fair and consistent manner.
• Prepare and maintain accurate production reports and personnel records in accordance with company standards and procedures.
• Lead and manage hourly union team members, including holding team members accountable to performance, safety, and quality expectations.
• Provide on-the-job coaching, guidance, and leadership development to team members to support growth and performance.
• Apply problem-solving and basic troubleshooting skills to identify root causes of issues involving employees or equipment and implement corrective actions.
• Collaborate with maintenance and technical teams to address machine-related concerns and support repair and maintenance activities.
• Ensure adherence to safety protocols and personal protective equipment requirements within the foundry and metal casting environment.
• Support production ramp-up activities related to new engine block generations and adjust staffing and schedules as workload increases.
• Manage shift operations, including working every other weekend and additional hours as needed to meet production demands, especially during launch periods.

• Knowledge of raw materials and production processes used in manufacturing and metal casting operations.
• Understanding of quality control principles and techniques for maximizing effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
• Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance within a production setting.
• Familiarity with design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
• Ability to perform basic troubleshooting on equipment and processes, including root cause analysis of machine and workflow issues.
• Demonstrated record of good job tenure, such as holding roles for four or more years at a company and showing professional growth.
• Experience managing hourly union team members, with the ability to navigate union environments effectively.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Associate’s degree in business or a related field preferred.
• At least 2 years of experience as a Supervisor or Group Leader in a manufacturing environment.
• Experience in production supervision, production management, or assembly operations.
• Experience in machining or related manufacturing processes is beneficial.
• Leadership development experience or formal leadership training is an advantage.
• Experience working in a unionized environment, particularly with UAW, is highly preferred.
• Foundry or metal casting experience is a significant plus.
• Comfort working in a more rugged, industrial setting while maintaining high safety and quality standards.

Work Environment

The role is based in a metal casting facility and foundry that is more rugged and industrial than a typical manufacturing site, yet maintained to higher standards than many traditional foundries. The facility supports mid-size truck V6 and V8 engine block production and is preparing for the launch of a new generation, which will increase production activity over time. You will manage hourly union team members and receive safety training on site followed by on-the-job training. Work is performed on 1st and 2nd shifts, with training initially on 1st shift and transition to 2nd shift (approximately 1:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.). The schedule includes working every other weekend and additional hours as needed, especially closer to launch periods. Personal protective equipment is required, including steel-toed footwear, ear plugs, and safety glasses, reflecting the industrial nature of the environment and the emphasis on safety.

This is a Contract position based out of Saginaw, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
