Key Responsibilities

• Manage a mixed caseload of general liability and catastrophic injury matters from intake through resolution, prioritizing high-exposure files.
• Develop defense strategy and litigation plans, including investigation, factual development, and legal research for complex bodily injury claims.
• Work directly with retained defense counsel and outside trial counsel to coordinate case strategy, discovery, depositions, and motion practice.
• Draft and respond to pleadings, discovery requests, motions, briefs, and settlement documents with clear, persuasive writing.
• Coordinate and retain expert witnesses (medical, engineering, vocational, life-care planners) and prepare expert reports and disclosures.
• Prepare witnesses for deposition and trial, take and defend depositions, and attend mediations, settlement conferences, and hearings.
• Provide day-to-day client counseling and regular case status updates to internal and external stakeholders.
• Oversee and mentor more junior attorneys and paralegals, assigning tasks and reviewing work product to ensure quality and timeliness.
• Manage case budgets and vendor relationships, and collaborate with claims professionals to evaluate exposures and settlement authority.
• Attend court appearances and provide trial support, including jury selection, exhibits preparation, and trial advocacy as needed.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) Degree
• 2+ years of civil defense litigation experience, with demonstrated handling of catastrophic injury and serious bodily injury matters.
• Active membership in the California State Bar and in good standing.
• Proven experience acting as defense counsel and coordinating with outside trial teams.
• Substantive experience with premises liability claims, including premises investigation and causation analysis.
• Strong trial and deposition experience, including courtroom presence and advocacy skills.
• Excellent legal writing, oral advocacy, and negotiation skills with a track record of drafting persuasive motions and settlement memoranda.
• Experience coordinating and working with medical and technical experts.
• Ability to manage a high-volume and high-exposure caseload, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
• Proficiency with litigation management tools and e-discovery platforms; comfort with Microsoft Office suite.
• Strong interpersonal skills, client-focused orientation, and ability to collaborate with claims, risk management, and outside counsel.
• Willingness to travel for depositions, hearings, mediations, and trials as needed.
