Spring Co-Op 2027, Drug Product Development - Cell Therapy Cryopreservation

Vertex Pharmaceuticals seeks a Process Development Co-Op student for a 6-month program focused on cryopreservation research for cell therapy drug products. The role involves establishing imaging workflows, designing preservation studies, and integrating experimental data with computational modeling to advance Type 1 Diabetes therapeutics.
Responsibilities
- Establish and standardize cryo-microscopy workflow for real-time imaging of stem cell-derived islets during preservation cycles
- Design and execute cryopreservation studies with different cryoprotective formulations and document morphological responses
- Develop computational modeling framework correlating cryoprotective agent diffusion kinetics with process parameters
- Integrate experimental and computational results to characterize preservation effectiveness and optimize formulations
- Maintain detailed laboratory records and author technical summaries and protocols in electronic notebooks
Requirements
- Currently pursuing graduate or undergraduate degree in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related scientific discipline
- Experience with mammalian cell culture and aseptic laboratory techniques
- Foundational knowledge of cell cryopreservation with hands-on freezing and thawing experience
- Experience with cell microscopy including sample preparation, staining, and image acquisition
- Knowledge of or experience with computational modeling for diffusion kinetics or molecular dynamics
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with attention to detail
