Overview Location: Chesterfield, VA Job Type: Full-Time Department: Police Job Number: 26-00504 Opening Date: 01/26/2026 Closing Date: 5/31/2026 11:59 PM Eastern Salary Police recruit starting salary is $60,147 until completion of training. Upon completion of field training and progression to Police Officer status, the salary increases to $62,751. After completing field training and receiving the Step 2 increase, Police Officer salary increases to $64,163. New officers hired before January 1 will be eligible for a step increase at the new fiscal year. New hires after January 1 will receive their step increase the following fiscal year. Responsibilities Operate an assigned patrol vehicle and patrol assigned areas for traffic and criminal violations. Respond to citizen calls, complaints, and requests for information. Conduct victim, witness, and suspect interviews; prepare detailed reports; make arrests; testify in court. Interact with community groups and organizations; perform other police patrol operations as assigned and as needed. Perform other work as required. Minimum Qualifications Must be a US citizen; must have a high school diploma or GED; be at least 21 years of age prior to completion of the field training program. If not a US citizen but actively in the naturalization process, approval must be granted by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) prior to employment; if DCJS does not grant a waiver, the applicant will be disqualified and/or any offer rescinded. The department will assist with paperwork. Successful applicants must pass a physical agility test. Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia driver’s license with no more than six demerit points in the past twelve months, or a DUI conviction within the past four years; binocular vision of 20/25 corrected; weight in proportion to height. No felony or habitual misdemeanor convictions; no misdemeanor sex offense or domestic assault conviction, guilty plea, or no contest plea. Must pass an extensive background investigation, including a polygraph, psychological, medical, and drug screening. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required; random drug testing and alcohol testing due to Safety Sensitive designation; prohibited use of illegal drugs and medical marijuana for this position; must not consume or be under the influence of alcohol while on duty or on agency premises. Position subject to CJIS Security Policy; requires a more stringent criminal background check. Additional Information Shifts are permanently assigned based on department need; candidates must be able to work any shift, including overnights and weekends if assigned.
