Assistant HR Manager

A prominent and well-established South African retail group operating in the fast-paced grocery and fresh market sector. Based at the Head Office, the Assistant HR Manager acts as a key second-in-command to the HR Manager. This hands-on role oversees day-to-day HR administration and compliance while providing essential operational backup to both the Payroll and HR Generalist functions. Key Responsibilities Industrial Relations: Guide line management on routine IR, prepare documentation, assist with disciplinary hearings and grievances, and maintain accurate records. Recruitment & Onboarding: Manage end-to-end recruitment, candidate screening, reference checks, contract preparation, and structured employee onboarding. Compliance & Reporting: Assist with Employment Equity (EE) planning, EE committee coordination, WSP/ATR submissions, and BBBEE verification documentation. HR Administration: Maintain employee records, track probation periods and leave, update HR policies, and compile monthly HR reports. Payroll Backup: Independently process and verify monthly payroll, statutory deductions, overtime, leave, and reconciliations whenever required. Health & Safety Support: Assist with Health & Safety and Food Safety training records, audit preparations, and compliance monitoring. Requirements Grade 12 certificate. Degree or Diploma in Human Resources Management, Industrial Relations, or a related field. Minimum 5 years of experience in an HR Generalist role. Hands-on experience with independent payroll processing is essential. Practical experience in South African employment legislation, recruitment, EE, and Skills Development. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (specifically Excel). Experience in retail or multi-site environments is highly advantageous. Valid driver's licence and own reliable vehicle.
